What do you all think about purchasing two of these speakers as my setup? I really think the venues I'll do will not be in extremely large rooms, so, I assume the combined 800 watts should be at least adequate? Besides, if I start doing larger venues, I can also buy more speakers anywho.
Additionally, are these speakers good with clarity and bass when played pretty loud? Clarity is a really big deal to me; doesn't have to be the best, but, a muddy or squeaky sound will drive me nuts.
These speakers are in the $1200/pair range with the stand, etc. included (new on ebay). If you recommend a better pair of speakers in this price range; I'm all ears...errrr...eyes!

Nothing really in that price range. I am not a big fan of that particular speaker, it sounds ok, better with a good sub under it & crossed over (or the dbx Driverack controlling them). The Mackie SRM450 I still feel sounds better than the JBL. Others swear by Yorkville & EV has a line comparible as well.
The JBL PRX line or the QSC HPR series are a much better sounding speaker - the QSC especially & it comes with a 6 year warranty right now, however the prices do reflect that as they are much higher than the $1200 per pair.

Hmmm...so, I probably shouldn't get these speakers? I mean, I have money to spend much more on speakers, but, since everyone told me how inexpensive this all can be, I've been a cheapa$$ and trying to find the lowest prices on everything (successfully!). If I have to kick out more money, I guess I will. $1200 is a good bit of money, so, I'd rather spend more on the right things than pay $1200 for something I'm not gonna like.
Thanks!

I never stated you shouldn't get them - they do sound ok, and that is just my opinion on them - they would be fine for someone starting out on a budget, alot better than the Peavey entry levels or Behringer stuff at least.
If it were me i'd save up more go with the QSC, although again they are that price PER speaker (or a little less). But it's only because I know what they sound like & in a side by side there is no comparison. Amps & speakers IMO are the main things you do not want to skimp on.

Maybe I need to go ahead and see if I can find a place where I can hear them for myself. I definitely will pay more money for better quality. At this point, I'm just trying to get what is necessary...doesn't really need to be over the top. If you feel the Eon G2 falls a little short in quality of sound, I don't think it makes sense to spend $1200 on it. Again, I have plenty money, but, just want to spend wisely and no over-do things.

Being that these are being bought on E-Bay, you really aren't saving any money - except for the stands. These go new for about $600 each anyway. If you do go this route, get them at a place you know you can bring them back or exchange easily - even the more reputable online retailers if you know what you are getting. Some of you local box stores will most likely price match as well. Listening for yourself is going to be the best thing to do. Bring in a cd you know sounds nice & full instrumentation, good rock (nice heavey guitar tones, solid drum riffs), pop (maybe something with a little 'boom boom' beat driving) & country songs. Then compare each speaker with all 3 types of music.

Perhaps I should take your original recommendation and go with the QSC HPR152i. Does it sound substantially better than the JBL PRX515's?
BTW, is the warranty just covering defects, or what?

They both sound pretty comparable with the edge pushing more to the QSC, but the little extra for the extended warranty is worth it, also if you buy through certain retailers like AmericanMusical.com they offer an extra year on top of that.
Here is QSC extended warranty program & what it covers (click standard warranty once there).

http://www.qscaudio.com/products/speake ... pr152i.htm
Click hear it today & enter your zip code for local stores that should stock them for you to hear if this is the route you decide. But again, listen to several different models to make an informed decision.

Thanks so much! How do you all think these speakers compare to the others to which I was referred?

I would put them in about the same league as the EONs, Mackie or EV powered. A local store here had a used set, they sounded about the same - maybe a shade better.

You may not even need 15" speakers.
I've been going down in size for easier portability. Quality 12" speakers or even smaller depending on the brand and model can put out some very good sound.
I just got a pair of Electro Voice ZX1 speakers that would surprise a lot of people if they heard them because they only have 8" woofers. I just read about the FBT Jolly 8R speakers on another website that may do well in small venues combined with a small sub.
My Electro Voice Sx100 speakers are 12" and they kick butt. Retail is $429 each.
My point? Go out and listen to several different speakers before you buy anything.
For the price I believe you can do much better than JBL or Mackie. Look at the EV Force and Eliminator lines and for sure before you buy, research the EV SX line if you're concerned about weight. Another speaker to consider is the EV ZX4-with a 15" woofer it can put out some good SPL and it can be had for around $600 each if you shop around on the internet. One good thing about 15" speakers is you can get away with not using a sub if they are good quality speakers like the Yamaha S115V wich put out decent bass.
Or, a pair of Zx1s and a pair of SB122 subs will put out a very crisp and at the same time full sounding sound that can work great for 25 people or 200 people depending on the room and some other factors. That combination goes for around $1,400. Add a decent amp for $350-$700 and a decent mixer for around $300 and you are all set. Add some cables and microphones and you're in business.
I stopped going to one Karaoke bar because the sound was horrible. Several people have commented how bad the sound was at that place since I stopped going there. They were using some old plastic JBL EON speakers.
Shop, look and listen before you buy . . .

If you are seriously considering EON's buy the new ones. They sound so much better than the old model. ( Own a pair of the old ones and I think they sound like crap) I have heard the new model and they are a really nice set of speakers.

As an engineer I prefer Jbl Speakers. And Mackie products such as mixers. I do run a BBE 362 maximizer and an Aphex 104. I can hook up my rack to any inhouse system and make it sound good. The reasons I use JBL and Mackie.
Schematics for both are readily available.
Tech support is nothing less than the best
Replacement parts are available some generic.
Resale value doesnt drop
They are reliable

All great speakers ..I think you have to determine your budget and go from there
You start off mentioning $600 speakers and have suggestions for $1000 speakers and UP !!!! -- I think a staple 12"powered speaker is the Mackie - you won't be dissapointed in them ( I heard many of them but never used myself)
You can run a great sounding show in a small to medium venue with 12" powered speakers. For pounding bass you may need to add a sub.

Thanks, everyone, for all the additional comments. It's just, now, I am even more confused than I started!
I read somewhere before to not get a size less than 15" for best overall sound. Honestly, I would like to avoid having to get extra subs, if necessary...I'd hope the speakers I get can hold their own.
How many of you folks recommend smaller than 15" speakers? A lot of folks here love Hip Hop music with lots of bass, so, I'm wondering if speakers less than 15" can handle that?

If you want to play anything with lots of bass, you really do not want to go under a 15" - even then I would possibly consider a sub. 12" i'd always use a sub - very few 12" drivers (for PA) can really generate a hard hitting bass like the hip hop/pop can generate. Most 12" & smaller for PA use are really considered low mid-midrange drivers.

Lonman...you are the best! Now, it's making sense to me again. I am a true audiophile, but, do not know much about PA systems, since I am just dipping my fingers in this area. However, I do know the different characteristics in many different speaker sizes and think I'll just go ahead with 15's based on what I've seen and read. Plus, I'm thinking, some of the wedding gigs I'll want to do may have HUGE rooms and I'll want as much punch as I can get.
15's it is...thanks to those offering lower sizes anyhow.

We invested in a small active Mackie sub and for our regular shows we use 12" powered Mackies (nobody can believe they're 12 inches) For bigger shows we use the 15". You can pick up the powered 12's now for a good price; we picked up our 15's off CL for $400 each. Just keep your eyes open. The sub and the 12's covers most rooms. The sub and the 15's go BIG when you need them to. We went active so we didn't have to cart around a large rack. Just something to think about. (I think the sub is a 15")

12" with a good sub is ideal for most situations. I prefer 18" but the 15" is good too.
