Web-based song book, browse by iPhone or other web-phone, and requests submitted the same way. Don't even need an internet connection, as the host's computer can create a stand-alone wi-fi hot spot.

Of course, books will still be printed for some time for the 30+ crowd.

Yeah, I guess I'd have to learn how to use the browser on my phone.

Somehow this technology talk reminds me of a child who was taking piano lessons from my Mom. The little kid noticed the typewriter on the table, a manual Smith Corona. "Look Mom," she said excitedly, "it doesn't even need a cord!"

Someday it may come full circle and someone will look at the printed songbook and say "Look it doesn't require any power and you can just flip through it. Like totally random dude!"

Thats my ultimate goal We have had people search the data base on the web site and requesting by texting on the phone. They could request wireless just as well.

I have also accessed music with a laptop from a tower via lan wireless. With WME I could upstream to the net live show. We havnt scratched the surface yet.

how bout digital songbooks kinda like digital pic frames. Just swipe the song with an attached light pen scan reader directly from the book at your table shoots it over wireless to the kj server. Build all the elecronics into the song book. Would use a bunch of batteries tho. Hve to be drop, ripp and beer proof! Maybe like guns they use for taking inventory at stores---the technology is all there---jsut need to get it small enough and inexpensive enough to be affordable. maybe using BLUETOOTH tecnology---attach a ldigital ight pen scan unit to a bluetooth set-up. attach a small 10-key keypad to the book and bluetooth---like a small caculator keypad so the custie can either swipe it or keypad in thier song info and name--directly to the kj singer que

Guess this all makes sense to somebody? But what then is the purpose of a firewall?

I was told by my "mentor", and it was beat into my head, "never, never go on line with your show computer". Now KJ's download songs on line, during a show. So...there's no reason to be concerned that something downloaded will lock up your computer and that it might do so right in the middle of your show?

I dunno, I think I know just enough about all of this new stuff to get myself into lots of trouble.

If I don't have a song requested at my show, and I want that song, the singer can wait till next week. I'll go home and download it on one of my desktop computers.

Hey, why not just sit at your computer at home and do karaoke? We don't need other people, do we. Don't need to sit and discuss songs and what we were doing the first time we heard them. I don't know, why techie everything up? Seems like karaoke is supposed to be somewhat of a social event. I suppose it's inevitable but I sit at a computer all day long and I don't care to go somewhere and use one (except for hosting, of course).

Speaking of which, ever sat with a table of 20-somethings who are all face-down into their cell phones texting someone else not at the table? Once in a while one will look up, maybe another one at the same time, they might say something, might not, and back they go. Strangest thing. Oh, and try to talk to one of them while they're busy phone socializing. Oh geez, my age is hollering out really loud but I think the art of social discourse has fallen by the wayside and we're beating the heck out of it every time some new technology comes into our lives.

Bingo! Give that lady a cigar! Today's society finds and invents ways to avoid social interaction.

Exactly the reason why kiosks are not "so... yesterday"

If you've got the above mentioned "cyber book" ask yourself how long it will take you to put in a song? Look at your cellphone keypad... search by artist: Elvis Presley.... 2 minutes later a big list pops up.... scroll to the one you want.... scroll, scroll, then select it... Now enter your name and send it....
How long did that take and how long were you ignoring the people you are there with just to enter a song?

OR, you can ignore your friends the old fashioned way by sloooowly turning the pages on the dictionary-sized plastic-coated songbook that now occupies most of your table and squinting at the tiny print. That's good for ignoring them all night while you're wondering who else you could be out with...

OR, you can walk up to a kiosk, pick out your song in under 30 seconds and be back actually socializing with your friends and not ignoring them....

Actually, Karen, while I'm not sure what the rationale is for your suggestion to do karaoke at home, I am in complete agreement. I can assure you that when I want to sing, that's exactly where I am. While I might have to sing the first song at my show when no one is around to start things off, when I really want to sing, I head for my office where I sing all I'd like, for myself and no one else. I no longer attend karaoke shows, other than my partner's. I had spent too much time and too much money supporting shows where water slurpping freeloaders thought they were the show. And I surely don't need to faciliate the actions of prima donnas with my hard earned dollars! I consumed food I didn't need, alcohol I can live without and hours of my life that could have been better spent! Yes, there is life without and after karaoke!

I am also with you regarding the text-messaging situation. I do feel sorry for the majority of kids of today. They can't spell. They text anywhere and everywhere, even while driving, even while on their jobs!

And do you know what? Of course you don't! I don't know what means to this very day and I have never been concerned enough to ask! And please don't anyone try to bring me up to date and inform me of its meaning. Thank you!

More and more options for that have opened up... Karafun, PalTalk, etc... The Karaoke rooms are some of the most populated ones on PalTalk (not anything close to the X rated ones, of course.... )

What's that old tale. NASA was putting up a tender for a writing instrument to use in space. It had to work in weightlerssnes and extreme hot and cold. NASA was willing to spend a million or so for it. Then a janitor hands the Project manager a penicl and asks for his money.

You don't type "elvis presley", you type "elv shoo" and get just the song you want. And I bet the kids know that while a lot of people over 40 don't ever seem to get the hang of it. I teach them, then 10 minutes later here they are typing in "elvis presley" again.

Hey, a web interface would just be a feature of kiosk software, anyway. No big deal. I wrote software that allows you to submit your songs before the gig. AutoKDJ has this too, along with a built-in web kiosk capability.

My 'stay-at-home' comment had more to do with the apparent disappearance of socializing, nothing more. Hey, they're not texting each other because I've asked them. It's the oddest thing. It's pretty rude, too, if you're trying to have a convo with someone and they continually respond to their phone, disappear for minutes at a time mentally...kind of pointless to continue.

I think this point has come up dozens of times before, and I'll reiterate because I believe it is the core of this issue - if you have a great host, a great song selection, and a great sound system, the peripherals are only that, peripherals. A show they do not make. Certainly we can get as complex as we can with getting those song requests in, but in reality, it is the song, the sound, the singer, and the atmosphere that make the show. I guess I can see geeks running to shows that offer all the latest technology but when I think about the 'faithful' who have come to our shows year after year, that is the last thing on their collective minds. Heck, they know I know their songs so their job is almost nonexistent - that is, finding their songs and bringing them to me. But that allows us more time to socialize ... see first sentence.

Then there are those on here OH NO NO NO You have to have slips and only one at a time.

Bottom line is we can take requests in any way shape or form. We dont make the singers jump thru hoops to get a song in. A lot of our singers are college students or college age. There is a bar here called The Study Hall. It has internet kiosks and I'm sure they would not have nay trouble with karaoke kiosks. It would be just an added service and it would not be a novelty here but I'm not sure it would be worth the added cost or improve our efficiency. I am always open to new ideas and have tried to keep ahead of everybody else. All I know is I hate making books and slips and dont use slips to track rotation.

It's Saturday night you walk into your favorite watering hole and walk up to the TOUCH SCREEN JUKE BOX . You touch the screen 4 TIMES / KARAOKE / K / KID ROCK / ALL SUMMER LONG A timer counts down from 20 as you pick up the wirless mic from the side of the juke box. You walk up to the see through TELLA PROMPTER invisable screen in front of the 10 inch floor monitor recessed flat into the floor. and in a few second the song you picked begins to play from the gazillion watt system with speakers hung fom the walls every 2 feet. The self adjusting mixer and effects makes thousands of adjustments every second to give you the best MIX possible for YOU. After your song you return the mic to its cradle for the next singer all while no one lifts their head to acknowledge or applaud.

And in case there is any question, I who wrote this am well over 40. Too well.
