I just ordered new 2 Shure SM58S, shipped for $160.00 total. Now I am gonna need some cables. I have the option of XLR to XLR or 1/4 to XLR. I have searched the posts and couldnt find any particular recommendations. Can I get opinions on brands and connections? Maybe lengths too. I was thinking 20 ft. I dont want them getting too far away from me, but just far enough.

I'll bite !!! ---Get MICROPHONE CABLES !
XLR TO XLR would be the norm and you can buy store brands and replace them every few months or you can buy the more expensive MONSTER cables etc all which come with LIFETIME warranty.

Get a length long enough to work but short enough so you don't trip and strangle yourself :D

I recommend Live Wire cables from Guitar Center. Buy two 25' cables for $30.00 each and save the receipt. You will never have to buy another. I have never had one fail yet, but I have only done a hundred or so gigs on mine.

Besides the guarantee, they use Neutrik connectors and Belden cable, and lay flatter with no kinks. Highly recommended.

I also bought a great deal they had at zZounds -- 20 ea 20' Whirlwind mic cables for $95. That is $4.75 each, and I use them for extra stuff and speaker interconnect. If I need 40', I daisy chain them. I can keep a few new ones in the gig bag in case there are any problems, but haven't had one fail yet. (One did get a bit ragged looking when a drunk fell on it, so I tossed it, but it didn't fail.)

XLR or 1/4 ? That surely will depend on what your equipment (mixer) connector is.

If the connection is 1/4" my recommendation is to get a new mixer.... 8-)

Let's not forget a way to secure the cable with a strain relief so that when the drunk 20-somethings try to run 25 feet on a 20 ft. cable, it won't get ripped out of your mixer or pull your whole system down....

 :withstupid:

I always get my cables from Guitar Center because of their guarantee. They are getting a bit stricker though. I brought a cable in to replace it and they turned me down. They test them now and if they can't reproduce the problem they will not replace the cable. Aaaarg! The cable has a loose connection somewhere, but only gives me trouble once in a while, so of course when I brought it in it wasn't acting up.

Do you have a cable tester? Did they use one?

The way to test that is to connect it to a cable tester than twist and flex the devil out of it. They all have an "intermittent" light that will stay on if the cable interrupts at all. If they did that and it didn't fail, I can see why they wouldn't replace it.

Post subject:  Re: Just picked up 2 Shure SM58S. Opinions on what cables?

It was actually my fiancee who brought it in for me, so I'm not sure what they used. I was trying to shorten my post by saying it was me.

His work is close to Guitar Center, so it saved me a 30 minute trip. When he got home I was mad. If I had gone I would have made sure they found the problem. I was a bit put back because I've never had this problem with them before.

I made sure it was the cable before I bothered him to make the trip. I used it for about a month after the first time it gave me trouble. To me it was obvious it was the cable because all I had to do was wiggle it a little and the problem would go away. I could use it several nights before it would act up again. I'm not sure what is wrong with it. I just assumed it was a loose wire.

Thanks MCKY for trying to help. I was aggravated enough to just through it away though. The new cable works great and I haven't had a problem since.
