i currently use cool edit & headphones to record but i need speakers to use when i practice and/or have a couple of friends over to play around
my room is 10 x 14
i don't want to spend a lot of money, but i want a decent sound
forgive me if this question is redundant...i've done a lot of reading, but the more i read, the more confused i get so make it simple please!

You could get away with one or two of:
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/pr ... sku=600735
If you only had one, you could just run your audio from the computer to two channel inputs in mono, then pan everything left and run the speaker from the left main out. Later you could add two.
These are pretty good units that Behringer recently raised the price on. The resale value on that unit is quite high on EBay. I was lucky to buy mine for $200.00 before the price increase.
There are numerous other powered speakers available that are more. I would not go lower in price (i.e. American Audio, Nady, Gemini) unless you are willing to take a chance and give up on all resale value.

Good idea -- I seemingly failed to think out of the box. It is a very valid choice if the speakers never leave the room.
If you think you will ever take it out and have a party in a bigger room, though, the B212A or equivalent would fill that need.

that's doubtful, but then again, i'm known to change my mind...could i still use it in my small space also?
i take it, i would turn OFF the phantom power when i'm using my shure mic since it's a powered speaker?
i thot a monitor was used for recording purposes or can you also use reverb on it also for singing?
(told you i was clueless)
thanks for your replies guys!

You could use the powered speaker Mickey mentioned in your small room, but like he said it could also be used with no problems outside or in bigger rooms if you ever decided to have a karaoke type party, in which the studio monitors wouldn't work as well for that.
Turn the phantom power off? With the Shure SM58 (assuming), the phantom power should never be on. You only want to use the phantom power if the mic is a 'condensor' mic, which the 58 is not. You could actually damage the mic and or the mixer that is supplying the phantom power.
A monitor is typically designed for recording, but can be used in small rooms & at lower volumes as a PA speaker - though not really recommended for one as they are generally eq'd to give an ultimate flat response that may not sound very good for live.
The effects can be added to any speaker - however your mixer does not have any effects built in so you really don't have any to add for live purposes. When you record, you add the effects after the track is laid down.

yes, but my sound card has effects so sometimes i use them when practicing on headphones...any way this will work with the speakers? if not, i need to rethink (omg) and get something where i can have effects....
thanks lonnie...

How are you connecting the system up now? Mic into the mixer, mixer into the computer? Or are you also running the output from the computer into the mixer as well as the mic?

I use a shure SM-48, 58, and 565's for singing online... I shouldn't be using the phantom power on the Alesis USB8 mixer ??? I also run thru earbud, and/or speakers but it's USB

Hi Jeanne
May I suggest a pair of Studio monitors which you could use for mixing and for your live performance in the described room size:
http://behringer.com/B2031A/index.cfm?lang=ENG
These monitors are not really studio monitors but more like a pair of powered home speakers, they sound like normal home speakers... I had a pair for 3 years and had fun singing live karaoke with friends, they are powerful and built solid
You better start recording new stuff my dear, I need more from you

No Kappy, all three of the mics you mentioned are dynamic mics. You shouldn't be running the fantom power on your mixer. I'm a little surprised you haven't been getting some odd noises in your recordings. I guess it's just another example of how bullet proof Shure mics are. By the way, I'm still doing "Never Been Any Reason" complete with the lead you helped me figure out. Thanx again.

If a dynamic mic is wired right it doesnt see the phantom voltage It is not referenced to ground, Thats why they call it phantom power.

I use a mix of dynamic and condenser mic with an MG16 for live band all the time. Since the phantom power is global the dynamic mic get it too.
Just be very careful not the switch on/off the phantom power with a channel gain wide open.

Ok, let me rephrase, phantom power will not effect a properly wired balanced dynamic mic. However, it is not recommended to run phantom power on an unbalanced dynamic mic. It probably wouldn't hurt the mic, but it can create some unique effects on the signal. In Kappy's case as all his mics are dynamic then he gains nothing from using phantom power. I seldom use phantom power myself, but if I do fortunately my board has it switchable on each channel separately.
Sunny, I'm still giving your dilemma some thought. If I am understanding what you are using now. With your need for FX occasionally for you and your friends to have fun with your almost in an " can't get there from here" situation. Your friends might be a lot more civilized than my friends, but I know my friends would destroy any lower cost studio monitor type speaker, and that would be even before the first twelve pack was gone. I think I would lean towards one of the lower cost self powered speakers like has been mentioned previously, and then perhaps just pick up a used MPX100 or something along that line for FX.

Thanks for the responses. Yeah I get odd noises btw... But only after I playback the backing with my vocals added No spurious ground, or electrical noise however.

Your most welcome. There are TWO songs I will not dare even attempt to sing, that is one of them, and Jane "Starship" is the other... Heck, I attempted Ice Cream man, but NOT that song, that is a TOUGHIE !!!! .. For singers only !!! Very specific vibrant vocal styles not for we mellow sounding folk.. (OK, I think I lied, I'm going to try it now)..HAHAHA TTYL

Look for some powered reference studio monitors. They have clean, clear output and some have some kick if you need it.

I would like to buy a pair of near field monitors for home purposes. I would like to spend under $250 for the pair, I assume they must be powered since I will be running them from my Alesis USB 8 mixer.. Any suggestions ?
