Out of curiosity brought up in another thread.
1) What city does your club reside in?
2) What is the population of said city - usually a Google search {city name} & population will generate an average estimate.

We always hear talk about how the kj's in one place may be the worst or best, that there is much oversaturation, etc.....Maybe a little statistics can be interesting???

My club resides in Tacoma, WA
Population approx 200,000.

Actually my club is in Evans Colorado which has 18000. It blends into Greeley which has 88000 for a total of about 106,000 I dont think this includes college students. We have the University of Northern Colorado and a fairly large junior college.

It is far enough away from the populous front range which consists of your liberal dreamers with no sense of tradition and their only cause is change. Greeley retains the old Colorado western traditions and shows old fashioned hospitality.

All in all it might have a more stable economy than the rest of the country. Ave bars here tend to run in the 100-200 seating cap except for a few bigger clubs.

Greeley

My gigs are in:

The big burg, and my home, is:

Brookville, IN -- 3,000

I also do regular gigs in:

Sunman, IN -- 800
Oldenburg, IN -- 650
Liberty, IN -- 2,000

Cincinnati is 35 miles away. And my karaoke setup, show, and crowd is more than competitive with the average there. As it is competitive with Indianapolis, Buffalo, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Virginia Beach, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Calgary, and Chicago. My show is even competitive with Indianapolis, Nashville, Seattle/Tacoma, which are the towns with the best average setups I have seen.

Obviously I have only been to some venues, but my experience covers over 180 different shows in over 20 states and provinces in the last 3 years.

Chicago suburbs -

Hanover Park Illinois - population 40,000

The surrounding suburbs about the same, so figure hundreds of thousands.

Lonman,

So Florida is comprised of 3 counties: Broward, Palm Beach and Miami Dade. While the towns in Broward are pretty much the main target area for the KJ's I associate with, many local KJ's also work in Boca Raton, which is to the north, just over the Palm Beach county line. A couple have shows in towns even further north, but that's the exception.

Clearly, the population of any particular town around here is of no importance. The towns are all contiguous and unless you are, as a driver, familiar with the area, you will leave one town and enter the next never knowing it. Similarly, you'd leave one county and enter the next also never knowing it! And when traffic is light you could be in all three counties within 45 minutes.

The population for the 3 counties that comprise So Florida exceeds 5 million.

So, as I've already come to suspect, what happens and is observed here in So, Florida is more representative of what owners, singers, audiences and KJ's do at karaoke, than what is noted in smaller locales with populations in the 10's or even hundreds of thousands, some with just a handful of venues offering karaoke! Very interesting.

Portland Oregon Population 568,300

Portland Metro Area Population (35 mile radius) approximately 1.75 million

It is not unusual to drive 10-30 miles for Karaoke here. There are so many venues that you can generally find several karaoke bars in your neighborhood. I will drive quite a long distance to enjoy good sound and a great venue. My neigborhood has 7 karaoke bars within a stones throw but I wouldn't give you a nickel for any of them. My best karaoke is in Milwaukie, Oregon City, and Gladstone.

I'm guessing within that 35 mile radius we have no less than 150 venues going on any given Friday or Saturday for sure. I'm probably low-balling that number by quite a bit but it is somewhere around that.

We have several handfuls of 7 night a week venues and more popping up every day.

Torquay (which is the area in Torbay where I find all my local gigs) has a popluation of 62,963 and according to the statisitcs, 26% of its residents are over sixty years old, (compared to a figure of 21% for England as a whole). So we are the land of seaguls and OAP's :P

Good news for me though, i've just found out more potential customers are moving to may area "Torbay's population is estimated to grow constantly over the next 25 years, at an average rate of 1,200 persons a year. Torbay has a negative natural population and is only growing due to inward migration."

Edited to add: There are about 15 karaoke shows/companies including myself.

:D A larger market is generally easier to work with and wages or profits are higher. However the costs are higher also. Here I work with bar owners, singers and hosts I have known for over 20 years. There is no role playing or BS Everybody knows whats going on and the bar crowds (listeners) are very savvy about karaoke and know how it should be presented. It is more personable and what works in your area might not work here.

There are advantages to both but I am used to the slow life with no traffic jams and small town mid America. We are more laid back and do not need most of the rules argued about here on the forum. We take care of our own and do not argue or worry bout rotations or how many times somebody has sang for every doggie has his day and next week maybe it is yours and all enjoy it and will cheer you on.
