Post subject:  need advice purchasing karaoke system

Hi
I'm trying to buy a karaoke system for my family and I been to a few shops and the selection is just over too much and I cant work out what are the goods, the bad and the ugly and if I ask a saleman they tend to push the one that has more margin for them and not giving me a proper answer

Anyway what I am after is something of quality and so if I can get a good equipment for a sensible price then I'm all for it.

Currently I have these in mind

Microphone

Sennheiser EW 165 G2 Wireless
Sennheiser e865 Wired

Speakers:
EV Zx1-90 with EV sub the name escape me

Mixer
I have no idea right now I imagine I dont need power mixer since the
speakers are already powered.

Can someone care to comment or make recommendations?

many thanks

Nothing wrong with your choices. However, unless your family are all top singers, I might suggest Shure SM58s instead of the Senns, which are so clear that they are VERY unforgiving, and could actually make a so-so singer sound worse.

I won't recommend a mixer, but it should have digital keychange, plus all vocal and music effects and an EQ.

You didn't mention whether you will be CD or PC based....

That is a quality setup. I normally recommend a Yamaha MG124CX mixer with compression and effects. Then if you added a dbx DriveRack PA, you would have a system worthy of gigging out anywhere, or hosting a party in a good-sized room.

If you have the funds and desire for quality and a clean setup, and wanted to rack-mount everyhing, you might consider a rack-mount mixer along with an appropriage case. I use the MG166CX (larger version of the one I recommended) and put it all in a rack mount along with my DriveRack PA and other processors. If you use the MG166CX, make sure you realize it takes 12U to mount and that leaves a lot of rack cases out.

Instead you may want to go with the SoundCraft EFX-12, which is rack mountable and has Lexicon Effects. Then if you later wanted to go with compression, you could get a dbx 266XL or something to put in the rack.

For your quality setup, I guess this is what I would recommend:

-- Rack mount case 10x4 or 10x6
-- Power conditioner (one space in bottom)
-- Soundcraft EFX-12
-- Equalizer (either high-end with DriveRack PA or dbx215)
-- Compressor (dbx 266XL or even a Behringer MDX2600)
-- Rack mount kit for your Senn. wireless

That would make it's environs look as good as the equipment is.

If you didn't want to rack mount, an alternative would be:

-- Yamaha MG124CX
-- Some sort of equalizer (DriveRack PA or DBX215)

That is lower cost, of course.

Joe's got a point...those babies are unforgiving...whereas the Shures are a bit warmer and (dare I say it) a bit muddier unless eq'ed right

Good choice on the EV speakers. EV is top notch!

A Yamaha or MAckie Mixer will do just fine.

I love Sennheiser mics. I like that they are not forgiving that is what makes one stive to be better.

Wow

Cool Thanks for all the advice, if you make any recommendation
can you include the link of the component you are talking about so I
can have a look and search for it.

I'm from Australia so If any Aussie reading this and know where I can get these sort of equipment please let me know also.

I mainly buy it for my wife and the kids .. I dont really sing and they love singing and technically dont know much about karaoke equipment..they just want something setup and they sing and since I'm not into this stuff so I have no idea either so I'm here doing some research.

Please recommended me any equipment you think I should look at apart from my limited knowledge on the stuff I mentioned.

Also right now its probably disc based karaoke but I will look to integrate karaoke into my HTPC equipment. Software and computer is something I know hell of a lot about so at some stage I move to software based running everything off my 5TB array.

Thanks again

I don't link anymore for easily found items, because all you have to do is search for the name at Google. Try it:

Yamaha MG124CX
dbx 215

Those are the two pieces I recommend for you at this point (the DriveRack will be overkill). If you use Firefox, just highlight the words, right click, and pull down to the
Search Google for "Yamaha MG124CX" entry.

Ok after reading the reply and doing a bit of research this is what I have in mind

Speakers:
EV Zx1 Series
EV SB122 Subwoofer

Mixer:
Yamaha MG124CX

Microphone:
Audio-Technica 2000 Series

I dont think they are great vocalist lot so sennheiser and Shure may scare them
so I go with something cheaper so they dont sound too bad.

Do I need an Amplifier and what type? I like to use the amp for my music and movies as well.

and finally do you think it's over kill for a home karaoke setup?

Chec the QSC website for an amp that matches your speakers. They are excellent and clean for your deserving EV's. The pros love em and the big act acts use em. The are probably the best overall value on the market today.
