Post subject:  What equipment would you buy with UNLIMITED resources?

Hello Everyone,

I've seen dozens of rigs in dozens of bars, from Tokyo to Tucson, Arizona (where I now live), and I have yet to find what I would consider the ULTIMATE karaoke setup.

What would YOU buy if you won the Powerball? What speakers, boards, players, hard drives, mikes, etc would you get if money was no concern? Would you go with an All-In-One system or would you build from the ground up? (I assume most of you will say "from the ground up.)

Just something I like to ponder before falling asleep at night. Now all I need is to win the Powerball...

Tom

P.S. Obviously I'm new to this site, so if this question has been asked dozens of times before than I apologize.

I would not change the equipment, except for adding a few more speakers for those really huge car shows...but I would hire roadies to put it up for me. Those amps and speakers are getting heavy in my old age.

Actually, I don't think I have ever seen it phrased quite that way.

I can't decide if this includes paying roadies to load it in and out, but I will interpret it to be something that I could pretty easily load in and out myself.

But for me, I am not sure I would be able to bring myself to purchase something totally over the top. I am fairly frugal, and I don't want to spend more than I think is justified. My current best setup is:

FOH
* Yamaha MG166CX mixer
* dBX DriveRack PA
* Yorkville YX15 powered speakers
* Lexicon MX200
* Shure SM58, Senn 935, EV ND767a, Audix OM2 vocal mics

MONITOR
* Behringer EQ1502 equalizer
* Samson Servo 180a amp
* Kustom KPC10M speaker

I would definitely upgrade most everything except the DriveRack and the mics. The Yorkville speakers sound great, but are not top of the line or anything. I would replace them with NX55 Yorkvilles or QSC HPR122 speaekers. I would also add an LS700 Yorkville sub. That is all that is needed, and the weight stays down.

WRT mixer, I like my Yamaha. But I would probably move to an Allen & Heath MixWiz, rack mounted. Without the one-knob compression, I would need to add the DBX 1046 4-channel compressor like Sevarin has.

And my Lexicon would be replaced with the Helicon Voiceworks unit, I think. Maybe not -- it is probably overkill.

I would trash the Behringer EQ, which is really crappy. (I use it for monitors and effects rolloff, so it isn't critical right now.) I think I would just replace it with the equivalent Ashly or DBX unit.

That leaves the monitor speaker -- easy choice, the Mackie SRM350. I am using that for it's good power and sound, and 10" size and light weight. I could spec a Meyer or other high-end thing, but it doesn't make sense in a karaoke environment.

That makes it now:

.FOH
* Allen & Heath MixWiz
* dBX DriveRack PA
* dBX 1046 compressor
* Yorkville NX55 powered speakers
* Yorkville LS700 powered subwoofer
* Lexicon MX200
* Shure SM58, Senn 935, EV ND767a, Audix OM2 vocal mics

MONITOR
* DBX 215 equalizer
* Mackie SRM350 powered speaker

All of that would go in an Audiopile.net rack with fold-out table. Add a van to transport it all, replete with ramp to roll the rack and speakers up, and that is it.

If I hit the Powerball Lottery, I'm buying a house on the beach in Hawaii and installing the best sound system that money can buy. I'll have a second system hooked up outside by my pool so anyone on the beach can come over and sing whatever song they want to sing. The drinks are on the house too.

I hope that includes me as well Bruce- we'd be neighbors then :). Me and my wife would bring over some great homemade Thai food and dessert, and would join you and your karaoke setup by the pool, lol. :wave: J.R.
