A couple of weeks ago I was had an issue with my computer program. It crashed at 11:30, so I had almost two hours to fill. People were still wanting to sing, and couldn't grasp the concept that my computer was on the fritz and karaoke was over for the night. They were like 'huh?'. I put on a couple of DJ songs just to keep things moving, and one person came up and said 'Can I have a mic, I want to sing a long?' I was like, um, sure. And I just kept playing favorites, and everybody just kept taking turns and passing the mics around. It was pretty cool actually. People got to sing with actual songs so it was like practice, and two, even people who never sung before grabbed the mics and gave it a shot because if they didn't know a part, they'd just shut up until the chorus or something. I've had a few people from that night come up and tell me they'd like to do just that once a week. I suppose it's kind of like singing with your car stereo, but in front of drunk people. I'm sure it probably isn't legal to do that, and I'd never consider it because the novelty might wear off quickly, but it saved my behind for the night. |

Paul, I've often wondered what I would do if my computer crashed. We had an incident on Monday night where all of a sudden we were looking at the windows screen. Somehow the computer had opened another incidence of Hoster and once I figured that out, nobody was any the wiser. But I did get this sinking feeling, especially with hubby standing behind me saying, "Why did we do this anyway? I like discs!" -- Thankfully we have a DJ computer with us all the time anyway, and if it had been earlier enough and fatal, I would have zipped home to grab a player and the CDGs - not a fatal evening...on the other hand, if it was an hour until closing, I probably would have just put music on. Wll have to try the 'sing-a-long' approach, though, even if it is just because I have no karaoke singers early in the show. Hope you got your computer back in working order... |

See my related post on the "Private Party" Thread. I have Power Point. I didn't want to get too much into that fact on the other thread, but suffice it to say, sing a longs are further facilitated by that type of software rather than just singing to MP3's. And what I do is usually better than the CDG w/vocal track. So, if you can't play CDG tracks w/vocals for your sing a longs, use your imagination as to what I am doing! And having perfected participation in sing a longs, I urge you to always use tracks with the original vocals! People are less intimidated to get up and sing if theirs is not the most prominent voice. By the time everyone joins in, the original artist will be so drowned out people won't even know he/she was singing! |

Yeah, no sweat Karen, just had to reinstall the program and rebuild the library. I think the night taught me to do periodic maintenance on the PC, especially since this program makes heavy use of temp files. The last point you made Eric is exactly what I found too. I mixed the singers to just above the orginal vocals and it drowned out the actual. |

Like the power point idea - I can understanding not bringing it up. Going to investigate it as a substitute and use it for sing-a-longs. Easy to have on hand since I have another lappy with me, all equipped. |

There is a venue that has been using PowerPoint for quite some time. They have a live band play from a list of songs, and the PowerPoint helps the singer breeze through the song. Quite a neat little idea, actually. They are able to do songs that will never be out for karaoke, plus they can do stuff that's hot on the radio right now. |
