I know that regular HT/Audiophile speakers is not appropriate for Karaoke as the tweeters could easily blow up.

However, can I use my Home Theater JBL 12" 250W sub-woofer for Karaoke?

Thanks,

Since bass is not really in th frequency for vocals, you could give it a shot.

My experience has been that if you are pushing 12" or bigger PA speakers with enough power, the subwoofer gets lost in the shuffle. Or so it seemed to me.

Is it a powered speaker with 250w RMS? Or is that the "peak"? If it is RMS, then it might do some good.

Thanks Lonman, appreciate your inputs...

By the way, I'd like to have your opinion (and others) on the entry powered speaker Behringer B212A vs. Tapco Thump TH-15P? I bet that your answer would be neither one, but for an entry system, which one would be better for karaoke in term of vocal sound reproduction? (mckyj57 stated that he likes the sound of Behringer better but these are close).

Note: I could get a pair of B212A or Tapco for $500, I could also just get one Yorkville NX25P or one RCF ART310a or one Yamaha MSR400 for $500 as well. What'd be your thoughts considering that it is strictly for home karaoke use only (20ftx20ft room).

Thanks mckyj57,

It's a JBL P12SW 12-Inch Powered Subwoofer 250W RMS / 550W peak so I think I can give it a shot.

How are you planning on working your crossover? Some eqs have a mono sub out, and I know a few mixers and subs have it as well. But I doubt a home theater sub has a useful output.

With 12" mains at the B212A level, I would recommend a pretty low crossover freq to concentrate your power in a small band. The lows of the B212A are driven with 200w themselves.

If you were combining it with the 15" Tapco Thump, I wouldn't think you should bother with that sub.

Now that you ask, I have no idea how to manage the cross over yet. Below is the link to the JBL subwoofer user manual with connector diagram. Appreciate if you could lighten me with the subject, providing that the mixer is the Yam MG-82CX.

I don't really think there is a way to cross it over with what you have. You will want an EQ anyway. The Behringer EQs are not very good, but their EQ1502 has a mono sub out function. I don't know of any other eqs that have it. It would probably be acceptable, but quite frankly with a 12" sub and 12" or 15" mains I wouldn't bother with the sub if I were you. The gain is going to be marginal.
