I know this subject has probably been beaten to death, but I have to ask. I've just recently taken over updating music to an existing extensive Karaoke library. New disks need to be ripped for use with Sax and Dotty. I previously used a Plextor drive that died. What are my options now to be able to rip CD+G disks into a PC? Where can I find a source for a drive that will work? Thanks for any help. |

Bob I could be way off ...I use a plextor and pray everyday it stays healthy But I think nowadays there is ripping software out there that will allow you to use almost any cd burner ? |

Doesn't matter much any more. Plextor is no longer needed if you use PowerKaraoke or the MTU software. Most any DVD reader out there will work. There may be a few that don't. but I haven't found it yet after using four different ones. |

Yeah, well this I can say for fact....Many new drives may now work. I have new laptop with Vista and a very nice "slimtype" dvd burner in it. Yes, it burns cds and dvds (seems to do so, quite nicely)...but the kicker is that they only play in one of my 3 cd players! So what good is it? Can NOT find firmware or any updates of any kind for it. I found this out the hard way, of course I checked it in player #1..worked well...so I made a few, well then at the show....the other players don't read the discs! Talk about po'd......So for MrD, it's back to the "Plextor" drive............. MrD |

MrD I don't think we are talking about burning CDs here -- we are talking about ripping. |

FWIW I have bought 3 different used Plextors off of eBay in the past year. The last one was the 760A, used. Currently there a number of various Plextor drives capable of burning CDGs listed there for sale now if you're interested in staying with Plextor. I believe the 760A was the last one Plextor manufactured before dropping the 700 series line. When I called Plextor direct earlier in the year a tech told me he thought Plextor might have a new burner available down the road sometime but had no specific details on it. But with all the new DVD burners showing up capable of doing the job Plextor may not come out with the next model after all, IMO. |

Plextor don't make many or their drives, so it explains why many are not officially CDG drives! I have an old Plextor drive but I'm using my LiteOn to extract and for backup, I get a perfect graphic |

FYI: CDGRip V2 (from the makers of Compuhost) is currently in beta (available on the Users Forums for those that own thier products). I have been using it for the last couple of weeks. This is what they say on the forums. This Major CDGRip revision offers these exciting Additions and Enhancements! -New simplified User Interface with expandable Onscreen Preferences. -Incorporates the latest CDROM/DVD Ripping techniques offering greater compatibility with most of today's CDROM/DVD devices. -Provides the latest in Advanced Error Correction techniques, greatly improving the quality of ripped Audio+G files. (MP3+G/WMA+G) -Faster Ripping and Encoding utilizing "Single-Pass" technology. -Offers the choice of TWO AutoNaming Methods, "Online CDDB/FreeDB Lookup" and the optional, but FAR more accurate "FastTracks V2 Search". -Improved L.A.M.E. MP3 Encoding Engine. Anyway, I have two drives that were not supported by CDGRip V1 that now work GREAT with CDGRip V2! Also with the new error correction capabilities built in the rips are PERFECT! And best of all, they say it will remain FREE to anyone once it is released out of beta. tbreen |

WOW! What a great forum with great replies. I downloaded Power Karaoke as suggested, but it doesn't seem to work with my Sony Drive. The music rips fine but I get no graphic when using it with the compressed MP3 format. I am assuming that the software recognizes both the music and graphic and doesn't have to be reassociated somehow. I have some other drives which I will try also. Again, thanks for the usable information in the replies. It's frustrating at this point, but I know it's not rocket science and I'll get it figured out before long. Bob K |

NOTE: Downloaded CDRipper Vs2, and it seems to work with my Sony Drive. Thanks all for the help. I guess creating new songbooks is next. Fun Fun. And to think, so much more work and 1/3rd the pay of what I used to get DJing in the 80's. Ahh, just think, we actually do get paid for this. I always said, the pay was for the knowledge and setup, the gigs are FUN! |
