Anything cyclic in nature from vibrations, audio and high freqs have a positive and negative componenet such as the pure sin wave. When a positive plus 1 is added to a negative minus 1 (at 180 degrees out of phase) the result is zero.

A speaker cone moves one direction with a positive and the opposite with a negative. When bass speakers are facing each other (exactly 180 degrees apart) out of phase will cancel and overall volume or SPL is dramatically decreased. In phase has the opposite effect and they add.

Another consideration is the power alley

Power alley, isn't that a bowling term?

The minimum height is where the horns are above seating head level. Bass are ground level as they transmit vibrations thru hard surfaces and bass also tends to go around corners. Bass frequencies cancel when out of phase and this effect decreases as the frequency goes up. Bass will be attenuated by carpet or heavy crowds. When a speaker is against the wall it will put out twice the power. When in a ceiling corner it will put out as much as 3 times the power. That is why jukebox speakers are mounted at ceiling height angled down.

To see if speakers are in phase place the bass facing each other a few feet apart. If they are out of phase they will cancel. Speaker placement is critical in certain venues and in some there is no set standards but take experimentation. A good indicator is how far the bass is (felt) from the speakers.

Just put the horns above the crowds heads when sitting down.

Well that explains why I has such feedback problems last week with my family get togethers. I didn't have my stands yet so the speakers were setting on a table that is only about 32" high. I have them set up in my living room with no feedback. I might as well get this ignorant question out of the way. The horns are?

The horn is the high frequency - top speaker in the cabinet. The low frequency driver is the large round one on the bottom.

Don't worry, I won't ask you anymore questions mcky. I'm 49, have a college degree with a 3.844 GPA and I am a high paid engineer for my company so I'm not dumb. I might not know everything about life but I'll keep living by my philosophy. Thanks for your advise.

Got my crank ups in the mail yesterday. Very easy to set up and use. My 215As were a snap to crank up. 6 feet high recommended. Is that from the top of the speaker, middle, or bottom?

Quote: Power alley, isn't that a bowling term? BTW I have installed sound systems in large bowling alleys including the lounge. They are worse than churches. In the bowling area we just hung 70 volt speakers in the false ceiling tiles and called it good.

They sound pretty good to me. Plenty of bass from quite a ways back. I'm still not sure how that helps me know how high to crank them?

If the singers are going to be anywhere near the mains, the horn pattern has to not hit them too directly, or you will be fighting feedback all night.

Now I know why they threatened to give your money back -- if you have looked at those speakers and are still asking that question you ask too many questions.

I agree with Lonman. Hmmm did MCKYJ57 get out of the wrong side of bed this morning? I can't believe that when someone here asks a question about something that they don't know about SOME people give them a hard time. Geee 57 were you born knowing everything and never had to ask a question? OHHH! Thanks guys. I used to be a training manager and I always encouraged people to ask questions. As a matter of fact I gave candy away every time someone asked a question. Anyway, I feel I have a good base of karaoke music for my first real show. Of course I am still waiting for my soundcore and foundation sets to arrive so I can rip them to my laptop. I've also got another 15 CDGs or so coming. This along with the 1200 or so songs I already have should get me close to 2000 depending on dupes. I do have to say again, the cranking speakers are awesome. I can't imagine doing it any other way. I have several cloth bags with carrying handles I purchased at Wal Mart for a buck apiece (grocery bags) to keep all my cords in. I bought some cheap velcro straps to keep them from tangling. My speaker stands did not come with a bag so I'm going to find something to put them in. How do you guys advertise? I will use word of mouth of course, maybe put some flyers up at the local grocery stores, Wal Mart and the college. I plan on contacting the chamber of commerce. There is a couple fairly local sites dedicated to party type businesses and I know a couple dj'ers that have their own site. Does anyone use this site to advertise?

We learn by making mistakes, and if you always ask you 1) take up someone else's time and 2) don't make the mistake yourself. In other words, in my opinion there are some situations where no question is dumb. But that isn't all situations. I you always ask the question and never research things yourself, you won't learn.
