I want to use a Shure SM-58 microphone with my home karaoke setup. I don't want to fool with a mixer (yet) for various reasons (my component cabinet is full, I don't know enough about them yet etc).

Is there anything I need to know before I stick one of those xlr to 1/4" adapters onto the end of my xlr mic cable?

Should I use an XLR to 1/4" cable?

Is a Shure SM58 a bad choice for this use because of the balanced unbalanced thing?

Is there a better option for the 1/4" jack on the front of my machine?

The mics I use came with those adaptors, and I've never had a problem.

Sometimes you need to occassionally clean the 1/4" connection, but that's with any physical connection male to female or otherwise. If it gets connected and reconnected over and over, eventually you'll have to clean some gunk up.

Are you just plugging into a player or something else. The only thing I can see is that most players inputs aren't strong enough to really support a good mic like the Shure. You may want to buy a cheesy mic with an unbalanced 1/4" plug on it. The Shure may actually seem pretty muffled on a player type input.

Right now I'm plugging my microphone into the mic jack on my component karaoke player. It's not very loud but I don't want it to be since the vocal signal path is:

mic -> karaoke machine -> amplifier -> home stereo speakers

and I don't want to blow out my speakers.

I guess I have to add a mixer and that means I have to change out my speakers to something a little more heavy duty. I don't have room for both PA speakers and regular stereo speakers in my living room. I guess that means yet another thread or at least a lot more research.
