Post subject:  Good cheap backup karaoke disc player?!

I've been meaning to get one for awhile. This week, a soundguy accidentally moved the cord that attaches the controller to my Numark player and I had a friend running home to get his player before I finally found it. I saw someone just mention a $20 Wallmart special. I'm too broke to get much right now but I'm curious what other folks who still use discs would recommend for a small player that would have RCA outputs for audio/video. Hopefully I'd never have to use it!

I'm sorry I don't know of any cheap players, but when you are ready to spend a little more money I suggest vintage. You can usually find a deal on ebay for one of these discontinued players.

I run with computer only, but in a pinch I wouldn't hesitate to use my cheapo home system, if I were you. As long as you have the RCA outputs and can run it through your board to improve the sound, it should do in a pinch.
I certainly wouldn't make a habit of it, though. As someone else on here posted, there was a host that used their cheap home system exclusively and it looked exacly like what it was. CHEAP.
If you're running a regular gig, they should know the equipment you normally use and should be accepting of an "emergency" such as that.
I know that as a singer, I would.
Having said that, you might want to try saving up and purchasing a good used pro player for backup so as to avoid the situation altogether.

You don't mention where you hail from. In Canada you can find Electrohomes from $70-100 and they have a built in key changer. Plays CD,CDG VCD,DVD, etc. A little slow 10 seconds or so to load but work very well.

in a pinch, the cheapo dvd home players can play cdg tracks!!

Try it at home or the store first! Just to be certain.

But I also recommend the computer!

i'm in san Diego. i've been living hand to mouth for the first time in my life this year (not because i quit my dayjob to be a fulltime KJ or anything crazy like that). my Numark player I got on ebay has given me very few problems. there's a local karaoke place with decent players for as little as $70 or $80 but I saw a little handheld one in a Sam Goode for about $50 and thought about getting it.

Unfortunately, my DVD player doesn't play CD-g's. I found out the hard way when I first started. I bought a Sound Choice foundation set from a guy who came to my door and when i popped 'em in my dvd player AFTER he left, they didn't work. Luckily my player showed up the next day and all was well...newbie...

Though none like to admit it, we all know of several brands. The two lesser evils would, in my opinion, be Mixonic ans Performer's Choice ( associated with Sound Choice).

Both are available online, including e-bay, for something like 65.oo, and have all the bells and whistles. I actually know a host who has been running these two (rather than a double drawer) for 4 years and sweras by them. They sound fine as well.

I use an RSQ triple, and a V2GO ( made in the Pioneer factory), but also have a Mixonic, and it works just fine.

Heres a question. Anyone know if it exists, or is possible to run a small single disc cdg player in to the comp through USB and then out? Or would that even make sense?

Look into the V2go like Joe said. Its single tray, rack mountable, and will play just about anything you throw in it. I picked up mine at Guitar Center for about 100 bucks.

I have a numark mixer that hooks up via usb to the computer, and can accept a couple of stereo inputs as well, such as secondary players.

As Mojo says. That's one of the reasons that I bought it. It was one of the first with a USB port ( though their intention was for using memory sticks )

I also just use CDG's. Just for home use, I bought a single CDG player from Walmart. It's call "Karaoke Party Machine" and it costs about $40.00. Just connect it up to your tv and away you go.

OOPS! Forgot one. Pioneer DV210K. If you can think of a media, this one will play it, plus it has all the bells and whistles for vocals.

Available on E-bay or Worldwide Electronics 773/381-1796 for 70$ and free shipping.

Joe, you may have made my day with that Pioneer suggestion. I have been searching for just such a thing for a wedding present. It doesn't say it plays CD&G--do you (or anyone) happen to know if it is one of the DVD players that also just happen to read CD&G?

Thanks

Except it appears they don't make the DV210K any more. It doesn't look like the later models have the key/changer mic functions unless you get up into the professinal models. There aren't any on EBay at the moment either but I found one store via Google that is still advertising it.

Bought one a week ago for my niece- that's what reminded me. Brand new in factory package. They ARE still made, and DO have the keychange function. As previously posted, $70 bucks at either place mentioned. Might you have been thinking of a different model? They make around 6 or 7 in the "DV" series.

The easiest way to see it and the specs is to go to e-bay.

I typed "Pioneer DV210K" into Google, Ebay and the Pioneer site itself and came up empty except for one store which still did sell it for around $70, as you say. The Pioneer site had 310K and 410K and I didn't see key changers on them. I plan to try and snap up a DV210K from the one place I found it when I get my next paycheck. I will be glad to be wrong if they are still making it and somehow I missed it because it looks like a neat little machine. With the close-outs on disc packs at the moment, and some mics, it will make a nice present.

Well, I see it on e-bay, but it's from the same store you found. It's not THAT great. Many of the functions can only be accessed with the remote, which is just an annoyance to me. It DOES have features aplenty, though....

It may well be discontinued, but still in stock at this source?
