I'm planning a karaoke setup for the first time using a laptop PC. I see lots of software for playing the music and burning a CD+G for playing elsewhere, and lots of places to download the music. And I have a good microphone. And I understand how to connect the laptop to good audio amp and speakers. The missing link is how to get reverb on the mic audio since it will be plugged into the laptop. Is there karaoke software that not only plays back the karaoke music but also can edit the mic audio to have reverb? |

It is normal to use a mixer for this. I recommend the Yamaha MG82CX for $150. If you absolutely don't want to spend that much, look at the Behringer 1002FX for $90. In addition to reverb, you will find the preamps, compression in the case of the Yamaha, equalization, and other controls necessary to make your vocals sound their best. Trying to mix in the computer, even if possible, is simply not the way to go for karaoke. |

My suggestion would be don't plug the mic into the computer. Go through a mixer or vocal processor, and use the effects built into those compnents to get the needed results. I have seen computer programs that claims to offer vocal effects, but they were really disappointing. IMO. The effects were similar to what you get on a karaoke disc player, not good at all. I would never run vocals straight through the computer, or disc player, but use one of the methods above. You will get more control, and satisfaction that way. |

Like others said, I don't recommend connecting the mic into laptop but using a mixer for mic preamp. Please know that if you're using a Sound Blaster audio card, something like the Audigy2, you can use their EAX sofware for reverbs, it's very efficient but a little complex to setup... |

The preamp will still make a good deal of difference. But the OP said "know how to connect to a good audio amp and speakers". So that indicated to me the goal was to sing karaoke. |

Get a mixer with effects built in minimum. Don't plug the mic directly into the computer. |
