The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money. A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of it's releases. A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959. B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive. C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age. D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet. E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it. While this thought is still fresh in our brain... let's take a look at New Orleans .. It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division. Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D) is presently asking Congress for 250 BILLION DOLLARS to rebuild New Orleans . Interesting number... what does it mean? A. Well.. if you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, and child) you each get $516,528. B. Or.. if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787. C. Or.. if you are a family of four... your family gets $2,066,012. Washington, D. C < HELLO! > Are all your calculators broken?? Accounts Receivable Tax Building Permit Tax CDL License Tax Cigarette Tax Corporate Income Tax Dog License Tax Federal Income Tax < BR>Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA) Fishing License Ta x Food License Tax Fuel Permit Tax Gasoline Tax Hunting License Tax Inheritance Tax Inventory Tax IRS Interest Charges (tax on top of tax) IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax) Liquor Tax Luxury Tax Marriage License Tax Medicare Tax Property Tax Real Estate Tax Service charge taxes Social Security Tax Road Usage Tax (Truckers) Sales Taxes Recreational Vehicle Tax School Tax State Income Tax State Unemployment Tax (SUTA) Telephone Federal Excise Tax Telephone Federal Universal Service Fee Tax Telephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge Tax Telephone Minimum Usage Su rcharge Tax Telephone Recurring and Non-recurring Charges Tax Telephone St ate and Local Tax Telephone Usage Charge Tax Utility Tax Vehicle License Registration Tax Vehicle Sales Tax Watercraft Registration Tax Well Permit Tax Workers Compensation Tax STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY? Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago... and our nation was the most prosperous in the world. We had absolutely no national debt... We had the largest middle class in the world... and Mom stayed home to raise the kids. What happened? Can you spell 'politicians!' And I still have to press '1' for English. |

Sixty years ago a man or women could work forty hours a week and support a big family. We had the highest standard of living on the earth. Small businesses flourished and they were responsible and controlled the economy. Somehow that control shifted to government and they have bankrupted this nation over and over. Fix the economy? They broke it we didnt, now we pay again. The 40 million laws they have passed will turn into dust and the natural and spiritual laws that governed in the beginning will determine ultimate destinies. Find thyself and thy spirit. Learn the old ways of survival and dont get caught up in the schism and radical ways. Learn to butcher and grow things. The savior is inside not who sits on the throne or in the whitehouse. Listen to the elders on the cracker barrel not the liars from the media. From grassroots to national the ones who won spent the most on commercials. They now want to run the bank industry and soon will run the automotive industrtry .. This nation is hurting big time.. |

Having been born and raised in New Orleans, and after seeing what it looks like post Katrina, I could see where it would take BILLIONS of dollars to rebuild LOUISIANA, not just New Orleans. TWO HUNDRED FIFTY BILLION, I'm not so sure, but if we're going to invest OUR TAX DOLLARS in RE-BUILDING (anyplace), it should be "IN THE UNITED STATES", not all of the OTHER COUNTRIES that WE'RE rebuilding with "OUR TAX DOLLARS". Thanks for the post. Rosario |

C < HELLO! > Are all your calculators broken?? It seems the division isn't quite so simple for some.... 250,000,000,000 / 484,674 = 515,810 / 188,251 = 1,328,014 and 515,810 * 4 = 2,063,240 OR 516,528 * 4 = 2,066,112 < HELLO! > Is your calculator broken?? Yep, you can make numbers speak lots, especially when omitting large parts of the equation! The number of houses and un-housed population are only a fraction of what should be included in these calculations. These kinds of figures are totally meaningless! But I must congratulate you on determining the time that Jesus was resurrected... it seems like, contrary to the popular belief of only three days, it was in fact 106 years! Jeez, if you're going to post these things, at least learn how to divide seconds into minutes, minutes into hours, hours into days and days into years.... you might actually get some idiot to believe you then! |

Hey Murry, not tryin to start a heated argument here, but don't you think you come across a little harsh? JD posts a lot of interesting, and funny things, and most of us do forward things (because of time constraints) with analizing them to the nth degree. Just sayin....Ron |
