hello, all--
i'm trying to set up a home karaoke system for my enthusiast boyfriend and am getting pretty lost... there doesn't seem to be a ton of good info online about how to do this!
he currently has a blu-ray dvd player which i know does not play cdgs. also, the dvd/cdg player would be too far away from the tv (where i want the lyrics displayed) to have a microphone w/a cord. so my options, as i see it are as follows:
1) buy a cdg player and two wireless mics (w/hub). they sell the CAVS 105G at a karaoke supply store near me, but it comes w/a wired mic. they recommended Technical Pro wireless mics.
2) buy the wireless mics and then use his current dvd player to play karaoke dvds. i've discovered that there's some karaoke software (at powerkaraoke.com) which converts cdgs to dvds... however, i can't seem to get their demo to work for me... hmm.
i don't envision this being a MAJOR investment, but i would like to have decent equipment and access to good songs... would it make the most sense to just get the cdg player and buy cdgs when the mood strikes? or would i get more value by trying to convert cdgs into dvds? i'm concerned that trying to convert cdgs to dvds could take a lot of time and potentially not even work for me.
any help would be greatly appreciated! also, if you recommend a certain brand of cdg player or mic, please let me know where i can find it online! i'm hoping to spend no more than $200-$300 for mics + cdg player (obviously cdgs would add cost).

First, welcome to the forum. Now you may get a dozen or more opinions on what you can do, so you'll have to decide what you "really" want. I would recommend a cdg player, MEMOREX makes one for home use for $100.00, connect it to your tv with rca cords, you can get them 12' long. Then if you're not an audiophile, and just looking for some home fun, I suggest looking on ebay at SWEET GEORGIA BROWN cdg collection, UNDER $100.00. that should get you started. Good luck.

I haven't had any luck with the cdg to dvd software either so I wouldn't count on that.
You also need to think about how you're going to listen to the vocals and music. Will you plug the karaoke player into a stereo system? You need to be aware that live vocals could damage speakers that aren't designed for them.
This website has some pretty good basic information:

I hope this helps.

I won't recommend a brand but Karaoke Warehouse ships quickly and has competitive prices.

If this is just for practicing at home, I may have another, easier solution, butmight put you around $50 over your budget.
Though I would never use VocoPro professionally, they make one helluvan all in one unit. The Duet II. This is a machine that hooks directly to your TV, but includes everything else:
CD+G player, 90 watt stereo speakers ( plenty of volume for the living room or bedroom), 2 cassette decks for recording your performance AND copying the tapes, 5 band equalizer, 13 step digital key control, Digital Echo, and other effects, as well as AM/FM receiver, comes with 2 mics (ok to begin with) Bass/Treble control, music/vocal balance, and a bunch of other stuff.
I'm a club host with pro equipment, but I can tell you that this is my favorite office practice machine.
BTW- Going Camping? You can plug it into your auto 12V as well.
You can probably get it for around $350, maybe less, at a karaoke store, or online at Ace Karaoke or Doo Wop Karaoke.
Skip anything by Technical Pro, ESPECIALLY speakers. They inflate the specs on their equipment.
Hope that helps.
