I just got a laptop, I'm going to go digital now. Are any of you guys using an external CD drive to rip or do you find the onboard drive does the job fine?

I bought a plextor drive which can write CDGs a few months ago to back up my collection, never actually got around to it, but would I be better advised to get a psu case for that & use it or just go with the drive in the laptop?

I got an Acer aspire 5021 & will use compuhost.

You will have people tell you to not "wear out your drive" in the laptop. That may or may not be valid. You won't typically get any better rips with a Plextor these days, though. I would try the internal drive and if you have trouble, switch.

If you have several hundred CDGs, it will take a while to rip. So it might be better to use the external just for ease of putting the disk in and out.

Thanks mate! I tried a couple with the tricerasoft ripper I bought a few months ago. Seems ok so far, not problens with the music/lyrics sync and none of the text is distorting. I'd better get an external drive to do them properly though. I don't actually know how many discs I got tbh! About 6500 songs in my books so far, so I guess that makes around 400 discs. Some long nights ahead!!

I just did them as I was doing other things -- watched some TV, wrote some programs, etc. I forgot and let them sit for a while, then remembered. Some days I did 20 disks, others 5. But after the first 250 (which is what I had when I bought the software initially) I kind of did them as I bought them all the way up to the 700+ CDGs I have now.

I think it was on the MTU Hoster site that I was able to procure a list of drives that will read CDGs - there are literally hundreds. Might check there to find out for sure.

go to the site for cdrwin (goldenhawk), and there's a list of the accepted drives...

I found a LOT of older drives on ebay for $10 each... I have spares! LOL!
