I'm trying to add some new songs to what I sing. I do mostly alternative/rock and a little bit of rap. I do a pretty good job at rock or rap songs that involve singing pretty fast, or singing for a long time without taking many breaths. (Songs like One Week, Colt 48, etc) I'm looking for some more like that, either rock or rap, but not stupid poppy rap songs, something like Rapper's Delight or something by Eminem or anything like that might be ok. I was even thinking of something like King Without a Crown by Miyathatsu (sp?) Any suggestions?

Here's a couple:
Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire"
Reunion's "Life is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)" - This one came out in 1974 (long before Rap was even popular).

Hmm, I know the first one, I'll have to look up the second one.

welcome Chris :) good luck with your search to expand your repertoire...a good suggestion is to comb the singers showcase pages for alternative or rock, we have some excellent singers here and some of them sing these songs

There are several versions of it on YOUTUBE.... I'd offer a URL, but since it's a blocked site at my job, I can't tell which one is which (I'm at my job right now and won't have access to another PC for the next 3 days).

Can't think of any Rap but my favorite fast song to hear (as I can't sing fast) is It's the end of the world as we know it by R.E.M.

We used to have this college kid come in and do this song and he never even looked at the screen, he had a decent voice and the crowd always went nuts over it.

There's a song called "Our House" by Madness that has a part in the middle that is very fast, pretty good song too. Snow, Hey Oh by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is another song that rolls along fairly fast, don't know if it quite fits the criteria you specified. Hey there Delilah by Plain White T's might be another one you could check out, girls seem to love this song. Rudy.

"Without Me" is the Eminem rap that goes over best for karaoke from the experience of my room, which has done most of the ones out. Good up-beat and a hook that the room will do with you if they know this material at all. Lyrics aren't bad for an Eminem rap. A Good choice. Puts a smile on my face every time I see it come up.

Don't do "Superman" or "Lose Yourself". Please.

Classic 90s raps done last night to great responses were "California Love" (2 Pac) and "Insane In The Brain" (Cypress Hill). Don't use Sound Choice for "California Love" which doesn't have the all important chorus onscreen for some reason. Once again the room is probably going to want to do this with you. I use Sunfly which is all there, but there's probably other versions of 2 Pac's most popular rap that are good also. SC is fine for "Insane In The Brain".

If you "REALLY WANT" a song that the lyrics fast, and you don't get a chance to catch your breath, try LIFE IS A ROCK by Reunion. Also for a change, try I'VE BEEN EVERYWHERE, by Johnny Cash.

Barenaked Ladies - It's Been One Day (I think that's what it's called - or maybe "One Day" ?) - we have a couple of singers who do this without looking at the screen - I think looking at the screen would only mess you up anyway. Truly a challenging song.

That song is called ONE WEEK.

Sorry, brain frat totally. I sat here and tried and tried to remember the name of that song. Of COURSE it's One Week. Geesh. Thanks for the knock on the noggin.

There's a Youtube version of "One Week" with lyrics, which is how I learned it. But it's kind of a novelty thing. I did "One Week" for "Three Weeks" or so but dropped it because the novelty wore off quickly.

And it took a lot longer to learn than I thought it would. If I had it to do over again I would have learned another classic rap instead because at least in my room they have longer legs.

Just my experience...

I have a person who does "One Week" really well. He never looks at the screen. I've tried to sing along when he does it and can never keep up. Really really a hard song to do. When singing that fast you have to pronunciate well or it sounds like mush. If you can pull it off it always gets huge applause.

yeah, that's one where you just HAVE to know it!

SC has a few that are pretty fast that I'm just glad I know how the song works... because it just doesn't highlight fast enough! OR give you enough lead time to see the lyrics to know which part is coming next.

Post subject:  Re: Looking for song suggestion

I got where I was looking at the screen for reference occasionally but mostly did it form memory. The choruses are all just slightly different from each other, and not that fast, so I'd read them. There are two lines, one in each verse, that are faster than the others... so fast that I think they'd have to be memorized in order to get them down.

I might give it a try again. But now that I'm out of practice I couldn't do it cold. I'd have to hit it again here at home.

Actually I just did "One Week" at the bar last night. I can keep up with it pretty well and don't need to look at the screen, so it went over pretty nicely with the crowd. I think I'm gonna work on learning "End of the World." Also "Without Me" was one of the ones I had been thinking of, as I already know it all, so I may give that a try sometime. "Walk This Way" was a great suggestion I would have never thought of by the way, I'm gonna see what I can do with that one.
