Please help!

I purchased the above machine for my daughter for xmas.
We plugged it in today but cannot seem to hear any sound from the mics except very low.
i have tried turning the vol to full on the front of the machine but this hasnt helped.
I was told when i purchased this machine that all i had to do was plug it into the scart on the tv and it would work, now im being told i need a stereo or computer or amplifier, pleas ehelp she is driving me insane.
