Anyone doing anything unique this year for New Years?

I always feel like I could do more. I'd like to make the night more special, but can't think of how to.

The night for me will go as follows. I'll switch off the night with a rock band, so it won't be just karaoke. I'm in charge of count down, we have poppers and champagne and then sing Auld Lang Syne. I'll do karaoke until about 3am or 4am. It always feels like a normal night. Maybe it's just me, but it feels like something is missing. Ideas?

For the first time in long time not doing that nite. But my format for that night is karaoke for the first couple of hours then more dance music than we usually play. Most rules are thrown out and it's party time. Even the hard core singers seem to enjoy this and actually request dance songs. It's all from big band to 50's and 60's.

This is the one & only night we will play about 20 minute of dance music about 10 to midnight until about 10 after. Otherwise it's about the same as any other night except of a more party atmosphere.

I thought about playing some dance music. The problem is there is a band. The bar will be filled with karaoke people that want to sing and don't want the band there. Aaaarg ! So my people will already have their noses out of joint because there won't be enough singing time.

I told the owner last year I don't care if he has a band or me, just don't do both. He went ahead this year and booked us both, way in advance and advertised. He is shooting himself in the foot. Karaoke people don't want a band and band people don't want karaoke. I actually feel bad for the band because people will ignore them and complain. I know the owner thinks he is doing something special by doing both, but what he doesn't realise is that is not what the majority want. It's a karaoke bar with regulars. No one even knows the band. Oh well, it is what it is.

Looking on the bright side of things, it will be nice for me because I'll actually get paid the same, but will have a break when the band plays. :D

The way I see it Babs, this should give you alot of time to SOCIALIZE with some of your friends, while being on the JOB. I think you should take the chance to RELAX and end the year having a little FUN. I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to WORK. Remember, "all work and no play makes Jill a dull girl". I don't know if you drink or not, but maybe a COUPLE of Rumplemintz, just for MEDICINAL purposes (keeps the throat nice and smooth for singing). YUMMY!

Wishing you a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Rosario

Babs - I totally agree and support what Rosario is saying....time for you to enjoy the friendships you've built with your singers. The year will end whether you spend a lot of time and money on making it special or not, and it sounds like you really spoil your singers. Enjoy their company! And All the Best in the Year Year to everyone from the very snowy Pacific Northwest. Be safe!

Babs - I understand what you are saying ..But It's NEW YEARS EVE
It's not just any other Karaoke night , singers SHOULD understand as well as BAND PEOPLE . I can't blame the owner for trying to accomodate both groups .

Maybe the band could pick a few songs and do a little KARAOKE BAND --have some singers sing with the band

Let us know on Thursday how it went Babs. But you've done this mix before and I know you don't like it because it didn't work well, so it doesn't sound good...

I'm out of my home room that night and doing a mix of singing and keyboard playing along with karaoke open to the room. There will be decisions made I'm sure during the night, and I've already decided that karaoke will take front stage. That will not go down well with a few non-singers who don't particularly care for karaoke but something has to be put first.

They hired me to do both. What makes this easy is I get to choose, and hopefully I will choose what's right at the time.

Hey Babs... I wouldnt take it as competition with a band. Its two seperate animals. Theres a market for both and its good that the owner reconizes it. I try to get the people involved in the show that normally wouldnt get up, and thats not hard especially on New Years Eve. its not much different than most nights even though it feels like it should.

LMAO I totally feel no competition with the band. I welcome nights that they book a band instead of me. I love a day off once in a while !

It will be interesting this time though because there really isn't room for them. The last few times the bar did this it was a tight squeeze with a 3 piece band and me on the same stage. I knew the band and we worked together to make it fit.

It isn't really a problem for me because my equipment is stationary. The owner basically built my equipment into the stage area. I don't know this band or what equipment they have. It will be interesting !

Thank you everyone for your well wishes ! I hope all my buds here on KS a safe and happy New Year.

Happy New Years to All....

It's going to be a busy one, at least for my small little company. For the 1st 'real' time, will be covering (2) places at once. Two of my helpers/hosts are covering a one time DJ gig, my other helper/host is helping me cover our normal Karaoke gig somewhat. It's held at a different/much larger bar that the same owner owns. It about 30 miles further away. Plus, we also have "Elvis" in the building for 2 hours. I have little doubt we will rock till 3am, an extra hr. MrD's Entertainment wishes all of you luck on your New Years Eve gigs! Hope it all goes well.....See you soon! MrD

UPDATE:

The band cancelled LMAO Supposedly the drummer broke his hand. When I asked the name of the band the owner didn't know. He said he has a list of 20 bands and can't remember which one he hired. Interesting !

As you know I was trying to do something special. I did the count down, played Auld Lang Syne, and made a toast when everyone got their champagne. I had one of the regulars start a conga line while I sang "Hot Hot Hot". I used people's names in the song and had them do different dance moves as they were doing the conga. It was a blast.

Everyone had blow horns and shakers provided by the bar, so I used that to my advantage. I had the regulars sing songs that people could use their noise makers to. For instance I had them blow their horns everytime they heard a particular word in the song. It was hysterical.

The owner had me go until 3am. He was even singing songs. I haven't had that much fun doing karaoke in a long time. I made over a hundred dollars in tips and was paid extra for staying late. I was dreading dealing with all the drunks and it turns out I loved every minute of it. One person got punched because he was stealing money off the bar. He was ejected imediately and the party continued.

Way to go Babs! Sounds like things worked out just right for you this NYE.

Maybe the owner will think twice about this band thing.

LMAO He is a bit of a penny pincher, so I think if nothing else he realises he can save money by not doing both karaoke and a band. The place was packed with a great karaoke crowd. He made a lot of money that night without having to pay a band too.

I will let admin decide if it is. Sure looks like the links were put there on purpose.
If you look at all three of her posts on this site they all contain links to the same site.

If Phil says otherwise then I will post an apology.
