Post subject:  microphone stands

I'm trying to pick out a stand for my small setup here, however I'm not very knowledgeable with stands, and I was hoping someone could help me here. I found these two stands:

Obviously the second one is better, but can someone explain to me the main differences between the two? Thanks.

Main thing is you do NOT need a boom stand, these are for live shows that need to get the mics into places that a normal stan can't go. Look for a plain stright up stand.

All the stands will work for all the mics out there? Would I need to get anything special, or is it just an easy clip-on installation right when I get it?

As long as a straight up stand has a mic clip that will work with 90% of the mics most people will use, there is nothing more anyone would need.

I once bought an expensive, heavy-duty stand (I think it was an Atlas) with a one-hand clutch. I loved it, and so did my customers. I think it cost about $70. Then one night a drunk took the mic out of the stand to sing and put the stand behind him near the back wall. He lost his balance and fell backward, right onto the stand. Bent it all to h*ll, and it was ruined. Only inexpensive mic stands for me now.

I have two of those stands, Quikloks, and love them. I got them on sale for $35 apiece including a mic stand bag. Knock on aluminum, no trouble so far.

(edited to change from Proline to Quiklok)

We use Ultra stands with the pistol grip. Excellent to adjust the height.

Yes, those are nice. But the beauty of the Quikloks is their one-hand nature. The pistol grip is on the *top*.

Yep, the one-hand clutch is a beauty. Wish I still had it. Maybe I'll try it again, if I can find a good sale or something. What are the odds of another freak accident like that happening again?

I use a generic cast iron base stand with the adaptor on top to give 2 mic clips. its designed for recording stereo but works well for karaoke mics. I do not like the stands with folding leg bases as they tend to get stepped on by drunks and bent.

Not to mention the tangled up mic cords.

Well, I just got my stand in the mail :)
...but I need some help with setting it up.

I don't know how to attach the clip to the microphone and then attach that to the stand itself. Any help please?

The clip typically will screw on to the to the top of the stand & the mic will slip right into the clip - what kind of clip did you get?

I don't know. Maybe it's not even a clip. It's this small object in the shape of a "C". I just found it on the pole and decided to take it off, thinking it was the clip. I guess this stand didn't come with one, which means I'll have to hunt one down. :|

The little clip on the pole is for a stationary setup to wrap around the cord & clip it to the pole to hold it in place.
Yes an actual mic clip will have a clip on one side & screw threads on the other.

Yeah, most mic stands don't come with the mic clip. You have to get that separately.

I picked up THIS STAND from Sam Ash.

Works well. Looks good. $29. It's better if you have a store in your area though so you aren't paying UPS to ship a hunk of cast iron around (the base is heavy).

Sometimes I wish I didn't have a mic stand though because the drunks love to play with it and pretend they are Steven Tyler/Usher. Once a night someone tries to do that trick where you thrown the stand and make it pop back up with your foot. It never works.

Find some small weights from a weight bench and add 10-15 pounds to it. This will detour the stand twirlers and make the stand more stable. It will also work great as a door stop when loading in and out.

I use straight stands, too, but add a gooseneck to get the mic out a bit.

They're pretty cheap.
