Hello,

I am working on a karaoke project for our rec room. (20’ X 25’) I have been reading through the posts on this site to get some ideas. (Great site by the way) I plan on running from a laptop using CompuHost software with a Yamaha MW12cx mixer and Shure 58 microphones. I really need some help selecting some powered speakers, I have a few limiting factors that must be considered.

1. I live in Germany but plan on returning to the U.S. at some point so everything must be dual voltage 110~220 50/60 Hz. I have read a lot of recommendations for the Mackie SRM450 but as far as I can tell they are not dual voltage.
2. Because they will probably be shipped to me, I would like to keep the weight under 50 pounds.
3. I would also like to keep the price under $800 each.

Any advice on speakers or the other items I have selected would be greatly appreciated,

Cannot speak for other brands but I noticed that CARVIN powered speakers LM12A ($370 350W 34lbs) / LM15A ($410 350W 39 lbs) are dual-voltage (as shown on the rear panel) - weight under 40 lbs each and come with 3 year warranty.

CARVIN is a reputable US San Diego based company with great products (made in USA) and support. They also have dealers/distributors located in Europe and Germany as well.

I have not considered the Carvins, they look good but I have not seen any reviews on them. I have been looking at the JBL EON515, is there a better speaker for the money? Are the Carvins comparable? Do I want 2 way or 3 way speakers?

I've used Carvin several times in the past, our band had an all Carvin PA - I still use their power amps almost exclusively - very good amps for the money. Their speakers are good sounding & durable - you wouldn't be deisappointed!

JBL EON series are great speakers in general, the EON515 ($800 ea) would probably sound better than the CARVIN LM15A ($400 ea) based on various online user reviews.

You may want to look at the RCF ART series (312A, 315A, 322A, 325A) or Electro-Voice EV SXA250 (430W 15" 42lbs) or Yorkville NX55P or QSC HPR series (heavy) as well. These are cited many times as higher-end speakers with great quality sound in the $800 ea price range.

Don't know if these speakers are dual-voltage though. You may want to contact the manufacturers or local distributors directly for dual-voltage feature.

I have looked through all the information I can find on Electro-Voice, Yorkville and QSC.
They all look to be outstanding speakers, especially from QSC, however as far as I can tell none are dual voltage they appear to make 110V models and separate 220V models.

So I am back to the JBL or the CARVIN; the JBLs are twice the price, do they produce twice the sound?

Lonman, do you prefer CARVIN over the JBLs?

I would choose the Carvin over the original EON15P, the G2 series is more equivalent - but also costs a couple hundred more. The new EON 515 actually is surprisingly good but also costs almost double over the Carvin.
Not sure what your needs or cost factors are, if you can afford the EON 515 (don't know if it's dual voltage or not), this would be better, but if it's just for home use (or even club work), you aren't going to be disappointed in the Carvin.
Also look at the Mackie SRM450v2, it's a dual voltage capable as well.

The EON 515 is definitely dual voltage; if I go with them should I also include a sub? If so what model?

I tried out my pair of EON 515's in a 15X20 room with 8' ceilings...they are overpowered in my opinion. I am guessing you will not need a sub in your 20 X 25 space. If you decide to go with the EON 515's perhaps you can try the out before picking up the sub...

I wouldn't buy a sub until you feel you need one. In your room, chances are you won't need them. But if so, you can always add one later.

There's the new Eon series and most likely more high powered, lightweight ones that are due to be released this year.
