Post subject:  Front rack mount mixer recommendation
Hi all, I am finishing my bastment and want to build a karaoke room. The room is 10ft x 20ft with a height of 6.8ft. I want to get the a pair of Behringer B212A 400w powered speakers, are they overkill for my small room? What's a good mixer for these speakers? I need a mixer that can mount on my computer server rack, and want to spend no more than $300 on it. Thank you very much.

The rack mount requirement limits you a bit. By "computer server rack", do you mean a standard 19" rack? I have used both, but never interchanged audio and computer equipment. I guess the mounting holes would be the same.

There is the Behringer RX1202FX, which has effects. You might want an equalizer as well, to sit between the mixer and the speakers. If you look around, you should be able to get both of those for $300.00.

It takes some fabrication to rack mount, BUT you can't go wrong with a mackie PROFX8. they are selling for around $200 at GC and sound amazing.

Thanks, it looks nice but I think this can only be top mounted, it is not an option for me.

If you read Micky's recent post, Behringer is going through some manufacturing troubles and many stores have stopped carrying this brand b/c of QC and support issues. I too was considering the B212A (250W RMS $280) for my home starter system but now leaning towards the CARVIN LM12A (350W RMS $340) to get the assurance of a quality built US made product with 3 year warranty. If you read through this board, you'd find that Lonman had used CARVIN speakers before and would put these up in line with the JBL EON series so you know what to expect in term of sound quality...

Not exactly. He is talking about a few non-chain brick and mortar stores in Quebec, CA. Not representative at all. It is a very anecdotal and local report.

I would recommend AGAINST the AKG7015 mixer. A buddy of mine in Beaverton, Oregon got that one, thinking it would be similar to my 7000/7050, and nothing is further from the truth! He messed around with it for some time, never getting a good sound. I personally hated it.

I fully recommend THIS one for the same kinda money!

Standard rack mount for the mixer, is there a particular rack space limit you have ie 3 rack space, 4 rack, 5 rack spaces, etc? Some rack mountable mixers can take up to 16 rack spaces depending on the model.
For your budget here are a couple of options with built in effects
rackable Yamaha - B-Stock but comes with full warranty & compression on mic channels as well! This would be a great board.

Not a big Behringer fan but this is another option

Those are full blown 19" eqipt racks. Something you see in broadcast or commercial installations. They are 6-7 foot tall Didnt yoy sat the ceiling was 6.8 ft?

In a room that size I would use something like 2 JBL EON10 G2's. Best placement would be on the opposite end, less feedback and singers hear the full EFX.

He didn't state his budget for speakers however the Behringer vs EON10, even though i'm not a fan i'd probably still opt for the 212 simply for more power & better frequency response. Especially if he ever does an outdoor party, much better for that.

I actually intended to say when compared to other "karaoke" brands.
I'd stay away from "karaoke" brands if I have an option and those as suggested by Lonman are far better...

In total agreement Lon but I have had a couple of full blown systems in a room this small. This is 10X20 with a ceiling less than 7ft high. Believe me with the attenuation you are running less than 50 watts per side.

In a few installations they have mastered the smaller system then graduated to a more sophisticated system with more watts. The initaial setup takes into account future plans and for a system that might be competition in the future I charge big bucks. The last one was a grand.

thanks for the heads up. I just realized the rack is a little too tall to fit, but I could make it to fit with some modification.

My budget for speakers is $600, and this will be use at home only, no outdoor party. The Econ10 seems a little over my budget, plus it's only 10 inch. I prefer to get the 12" for a better low end performance. Can anyone give me more feebacks on the CARVIN LM12A that wilefins recommended? I can't find much information about it. CARVIN LM12A vs B212A, which one has better performance down low?

If you are doing the actual work and actual finishing I would like to talk to you on the phone I would recommend double 5/8' for the sheetrock and some other suggestions such as internal wiring. For this I get big bucks but I would do it free gratis just to save you money downstream..

It's probably more of a personal taste, I just would prefer to have the power & broader frequency response - even in the small room (but I always plan for future use as well), doesn't mean I would have to turn it up - although I probably would, I prefer big sound & the EON10 wouldn't cut it for me - plus the fact of the almost $200 price difference.
And yes I know those EON sound good, but given the choice i'd still opt for the bigger driver, & more power for almost $200 less.
