Yes sometimes they are not wanted at a show. For whatever valid reason (school/family hour/church group etc).

Unfortunately with different versions of many songs (not all say "radio version") and sometimes the "radio version" may be the only version I know, it is difficult to know ALL of the profane songs. And if you don't know a song is profane trust me, maybe the 16 year old trying to get away with something may find a song that you may have missed. I had to censor (stop) a singer once at a school who sang a inappropriate song that I was not familiar with in advance.

I could go throgh my book of 8k or so songs and flag many if not most of the profane songs, but not anywhere near "all" of them.

Any ideas or lists (by manufacturer) that could help with this problem?

Looking at/listening to all of the songs is no longer a realistic option due to the time involved.

Each & every song that i'm not sure of I lookup the lyrics. Don't take much longer to pop them into google to look up. There are certain bands if you have one, there are probably others. Pretty simple.

Sound Choice puts ** by the song title to indicate "adult." Have also noticed ITunes puts a PA by songs but I have yet to figure out why Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Gry," got that designation. I must be too old to figure it out.

We have half the amount of songs as you do, Dr. Fred, so I am thinking of coding our list for future reference before it gets any bigger. We actully have people who do the Rodeo Song, Pussycat Song, etc. but I've decided that if I have just $20 to spend on songs that month, then they can continue to bring those songs on their own and I will spend my money providing something else. Coming from an era when we thought it was silly for Ed Sullivan to make the Rolling Stones sing, "Let's spend the DAY together," I hate to play censor. But some songs seem to lack any value other than for shock. (and even if you get a sanitized version, the person still knows the "bad word" should be there and shouts it out--so its probably not enough to just choose your radio version--probably have to have a "rule.")

Don't know--still kicking the whole concept around in my head but I do know I want to be able to remove songs for family-type venues so I'm going to do the work now to at least code them for future consideration.

When I do the library, I will put "(Explicit)" by offensive songs. Now not all are done so at this time, but a good number are and working on it.

My book is coded for example A124 (A indicating the Case, 124 the disc number etc)

I've put a "W" by any offensive songs (w for warning and also because it's unlikely i'll ever reach a W case).

No customer has ever clocked what the W is for, but it acts as a visual note for any host using my rig, who can advise the singer accordingly for the venue.

By adding a subtle sign that the song may be offensive, those out to create havoc haven't got a quick and easy way to find the song... they'd have to know its title or artist to sing it.

As for finding them, a lot is common sense and the rest was through trial and error...

Great discussion ! I really think these are great ideas for anyone who needs or wants distinction.

The only time I have found the need to disallow profanity is a private party. In that case I've had to filter songs as they were given to me, explaining certain songs would not be appropriate. It works for me because most people won't pick inappropriate songs at these parties any way. I can probably count on one hand how many times I've turned down a request because it was to racey for the enviroment.

I can see though how it would be a concern for some of you and I applaud the extra work that has gone into profanity proofing your books.

When I enter a new disc or find a song that I may have missed, a simple <PA> gets tagged at the end of the title. THis way when I sort in my database I can look up all those songs only & pull them before print.

Keep in mind that when Sound Choice says "radio version" it's referring to the length, not the language. If you put up SC's radio version of 50 Cent's "P.I.M.P" you are still going to get M######### P.I.M.P onscreen in each and every chorus, but just not as many times because the song is shorter. And believe me if anyone gets onstage to sing P.I.M.P. they are going to sing that word in there because that's why they put the song up. Plus nothing else fits really anyway. The song was built around that word.

Well anyway... I'm just using the same books with everything in them for my language restricted Elks job. It's only two nights a month and I'm not going to make new books. I'm just disallowing from the stage if anything offensive comes up. But it hardly ever has. Everyone just instinctively knows it's an Elks lodge and they have to watch it.

But there has been a couple of times. One was I'm sure a test. "Fire Water Burn" on a slip with his name and nothing else. I just looked him in the eye and said "C'mon man. You know you can't do that in here." He just grinned back with an expression like "you passed."

The other was another guy... "Down With The Sickness" and I think it was a joke. He knew I wasn't going to let that one happen.

There was no drama in either case. Just knowing looks between us. They then both picked something country if I remember right.

So was Aenima by Tool (built around the word, I think it says it like 15 times with other words said several more). But this is very true about "radio" versions. It isn't edited for content, but for length. Sound Choice DOES put an explicit lyrics notation next to SOME songs, however they often miss the mark when other songs should be noted so you can't even rely on that.
