To refresh everybodys memory I do a bar that stores my stuff for nothing, they choose the host and all I do is go in and collect my $87.50. (1/2 $175). We had a minor blowout in Dec and I thought I was leaving. I talked to the owners wife over the holidays and she said you can still leave your system here no charge. I went in today to pick it up and the owner was eating lunch I stole a fry from his plate and said this is a sad day! He grinned and said dont take your stuff yet!! They had tried another host and actually they didnt want to lose my system. I have worked in many bars in several vocations and seldom have I had the relationship with owners like I have at this place. So with a bit of palavering, a handshake and a hug I went back home. |

If I read your post right, they are not charging you to store your stuff there, they are paying you to use your system. Is that right? If so I think you are crazy. I would never lend my system to another KJ. Nobody takes care of your stuff like you do, and everybody thinks they know the best settings for the system, and make changes accordingly. I used a bars system where 3 different KJ's used it on different nights, and the system always sounded like crap after another made changes. Has to waste a few songs getting it right again. Second, there was a case I saw in a forum here where the bar lost the lease, and the property owner locked out the bar owner, and thus the KJ, leaving his system he left inaccessable to the KJ. Hiring a host now with people talent often involves somebody that is computer illiterate and doesnt know how to run sophisticated systems. However my system at it's worst still blows most away. The software although for a techie is easily learned by novices and can provide a karaoke or DJ format or combo of both. I do formal weddings, private parties or weekly bar gigs. For more info please click on the WWW link below. I am in small town mid America where 2 men can look each other in the eye shake hands and thats the way it's going to be. Following is a copy and paste of my system description from the web site. I am not your typical karaoke business but from experience in many other vocations I operate as a total professional. Thank you for your concern and comments. BTW My system while in the bar is fully covered by insurance for damage or theft. Ollie Smith Cabaret Karaoke Quote: This is a professional state of the art system. All the conveniences to make even the first time singer comfortable. It also makes singers on old DJ recordings sound like they are singing live. We can also make a recording of your live performance to take home with you. Making it an experience you can treasure forever, with full effects like you are doing it in a professional recording studio. For you enthisiasts we can record with no effects (vocal with music) and vocal only for those with the software to mix their own at home (bring a flash drive). We can also accommodate those singers who bring their favorite karaoke songs on a flash drive which we are happy to play. I have extensive experience in sound systems and believe I have put together a system that for most venues is absolutely the best. .
The mics used are Shure 58's and with a Mackie CFX12 mixer the vocals are compressed with a DBX 266xl compressor.. . Mixer internal effects and an Alesis Microverb 4 processor and a Lexicon MPX 550 is used for processing vocal and music. Then a BBE 362 maximizer and an Aphex 104 further processes the audio. The speakers are JBL Eons. |

I agree and disagree about loaning equipment. When I first started I used loaner equpment. I treated it with the greatest respect. I believe it depends on who you trust your equipment to. Karyoker has done this for a while now with out a problem, so it sounds like his judgement of the people doing the hiring has been good. It is taking a chance though. A chance he is comfortable taking. Total edit - I'm having a huge blonde day. Aaaarg! |

I assume this is a weekly gig? And the OWNERS are responsible for hiring the KJ ?And they give you $87.50 a week to use your equipment which is fully insured against theft or fire? Seem like a good deal ! |

Jam - You are kind. I didn't read where Ollie wrote he doesn't do the hiring. I don't think I could be that trusting. I'd probably want to hand pick the hosts and make sure they are trained, but that's me. All I can think is he must have a great relationship with the bar owner and trusts his decisions. I wouldn't judge his reasoning. Thanks again for allowing me a blonde moment. |
