I just bought compuhost, and as I am in the UK, delivery was $30. Now I just get a letter from UK Royal Mail asking from a further $50.63 in import tax, $80.63 to deliver to the UK!! Why on earth don't they sell it as a download?

It's all about the dongle!!

CompuHost does not sell as a download because they have an anti-piracy dongle, i.e., a USB drive with encrypted "activation" data that must be attached to any computer that runs the software. This prevents you from running one copy of CompuHost on several computers if you've only paid for one license.

Since the dongle is a physical piece of hardware, they must ship it to you, so they might as well ship the disc at the same time. If they offered the software as a download, they wouldn't be able to "dongle" the crap out of you for multiple copies!!

Because what you are buying is the hardware dongle.

I never had that when I had it delivered, but that's the luck of the draw from the US :(

You can use one dongle for 2 computers, right? I use the same dongle for both of mine...Ron

You're kidding right??? Are you not aware of the rampant piracy, illegal copying and distribution that is currently occurring everyday? I don't blame them a bit, and trust me, you'll soon see more and more companies getting away from the downloadable products and opting for a more secure copy-protection method such as a license key or similar.

I happen to really like the license dongle method. It allows me to install the software on any number of backup computers and have them ready if/when needed.

You can download the latest versions from them. However you do need the dongle to get more than 2 minutes of playtime from the product. :)

The UK charges $50.63 Import tax for a $180.00 product??? This is a clear example of "free trade" gone WRONG!!! My concern would NOT be with the dongle...

Yep, you're right. The UK in general is an example of free trade gone wrong!

Don't lose or break that thing. That would suck.
I broken USB flash drives on accident while they were in the computer.
