I'm finally going to be hosting soon and it occurred to me that my 19" LCD computer monitor that the singers would be reading the lyrics off of probably needed to be more than 3 or 4 feet away from where I'm set up with my mixer and my laptop. I looked on ebay and it's a common item, no problem.
Do y'all use an extension cable? How long?
The ones I saw on ebay were 6', 16' and 25'.
I just realized I'll need a power cord extension cord for the LCD display too.

All my monitors I use are cable ready so I just convert my video signal to coax & run through a video splitter to the rest of all the bar tv's including the singer display. Singer display is about 25' & the farthest bar tv is about 100' I run 4 splits off the one signal without any degradation.

I'm a mobile KJ & DJ so for now I don't know if I'll be hooking into any house video systems. Don't know how either.
I just need a basic set up of me and my laptop with one external screen for the singer.

While I am at one club right now, even mobile I would hook into the house tv's for the audience to see and sing along with as well as the singer. It's a nice touch. Even if it's just one main screen, just unhook their cable & insert yours - I would install a switch at all the clubs so I just hooked into the switch when I set up & select it when I start the show.
But as far as an extention cord for your monitor, you shouldn't have any problem with any of the lengths you mentioned. As far as power, any power extention cord (most likely need a standard 3 prong cord) will work.

I bought a 6 foot vga extension. My monitor is a 17" that I had extra when I upgraded my home pc. I saw no reason for it to ever be more than 9 feet away from my laptop and it has worked out great so far. The only thing about buy extra length is what do you do with it when you don't need it?

Ok, so just to be prepared for the possibility Lonman, what do I need to go out from my laptop VGA port and what "box" do I need to use to split off into multiple displays or into the house video distribution system? I guess if they have several big screens around the room I would just need a cable? I know nothing about this. . .

I just use my S-Video (extended display) run into an RF converter then split the cable with a regular signal splitter. Never needed a distribution amplifier as of yet going to 4 tv's.

When you say S-video do you mean the VGA port I have on my laptop? I don't have red, white and yellow RCA jacks on my laptop. Sorry to be so dumb about this.

No it's an S-Video jack. Looks like the attached pic.

Yeah that one is fine. You should be able to extend the desktop, you must have the tv (or converter) plugged into the S-Video jack before you power up the computer.
