As an elder on this forum I will make some annual remarks and observations. It seems there are cyclic patterns here which as a convenience and simplicity to all I will pattern for a year. New members join with an enthusiasm which I encourage and appreciate all their opinions and input.

However it always seems that with their new enthusiasm, which most oldtimers cherish here, it is biased with an in-experienced desire for conformity and formats which are comfortable with rookies at each show. It seems they regard karaoke as a religion or cult where they can go from venue to venue and the rituals are all the same which is a crutch that helps them with their lack of confidence. Believe me I have been there with a first date at a bar out if town and I wanted to sing a siggie that was my manu. But that lasted about a year

Their concerns involve such things as rotation order and and and a childish emotional I am next without regard to anybody elses opinion. They point out typos in the book and suffer from compulsive disorders.

For almost a decade I have sang hundreds of new songs before hearing the original artists version... I sing all genres and have developed my own style. For 60 years I have sang on systems and with each decade they improved. I didnt learn how to sing on a system which I have now. The first time I heard a song (even 60's I was out of country) was at karaoke. This was from other singers and self. I have sang hundreds of songs before I heard the artists version and some I never did hear them.

I heard Roberta Flack in downtown Fort Collins Co sing The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. It blew me away and I wept. Yes I do it I do not mimic her or try to sing it like she does. It is sort of a combo of Hank Snow and an irish tenor but I shake the rafters and and sing it with the emotion that is was written for. BTW if you have it I do not need a certain version or key. I do it and do it well. This is only one example of hundreds.

In summation there are karaoke venues like mine that are dynamic and does not offer the old rituals. If we have several singers we tend to go back to the old ways but i get bored. This post was not written with malice or ego intended. I do hope it puts a different slant upon karaoke. You do not need to respect the old elder but please dont challenge my concepts either karaoke or tech I do jhave an eng degree but it doesnt mean (@$%&#!) anymore because I have forgotten most of what I have learned.

Charmin and others have tried to get me to submit to SS. I work live crowds and when I listen to a recording I am my own critic.

In any society the "ELDERS" have certain privileges, which, at one time or another
they TAKE ADVANTAGE of that privilege. However, in this case, I believe that the people who are MONITORING this forum DROPPED THE BALL. Everyone else that uses the FIRST offensive word on this forum uses $$ signs, instead of s's, or asterists, or blanks. On the SECOND word, just because you eliminate a SILENT C from the four letter word, (which doesn't change the pronouciation), doesn't give you the RIGHT to use it. I'm not here to JUDGE anyone, as I can get down in the gutter with the best of them, but fair is fair, if the rules are for ONE, the rules should be for ALL. I say shame on the people running the forum for ALLOWING this thread to be posted UNEDITED.

I do apologize for the profanity That is entirely uncalled for on a forum like this. I would go back and edit my drunken post but I will leave it as an example of what one shouldnt do. I would make the comment out of over 5000 posts I only uttered it once...

Sorry!!! Ollie

Ollie

What you said was great; what you didn't say was better.

But, to add to the ramble, karaoke to its beholders is similar to the parable of the blind men and the elephant.

One blind man approaches the elephant and grasps its tail. "Surely", he stated, "the elephant is like a snake!"

Another blind man approaches the elephant and grasps its leg. "Surely", he stated, "the elephant is like a tree!"

A third blind man approaches the elephant and grasps its ear. "Surely", he stated, "the elephant is like a big bird!"

Without seeing every dimension of a subject under every possible condition, who are we to determine what karaoke really is? And I assert that in spite of all of our collective experience we are not much more informed than the blind men groping the elephant. If for no other reason than the fact that the world of karaoke is constantly changing!

I'm a scrapper and a red neck fool. A cowboy a sailor and a trouble maker. I cant sing Dayo anymore because I'm afraid my teeth will come flying out!!! ROFL

I was the first one to read old Ollie's original post; but did not bother to censor it; because I know he will do it himself; and with an apology. I know his posting style well enough to see through it.

Was I wrong not to edit his post? Or give him a warning?
My answer: No

If I were to warn him. it would have been: please don't post when drunk. but in this case it look like he started sober and end up with one too many. :)

It's not about liberalism, or even our constitution. This has NOTHING to do with the Good ol' US of A.

It's about our sharing a space we DON'T pay for... karaoke-forum is a free site, and part of that is following THEIR rules.

Leave or don't leave, it's your choice in this free world.

I fought for people's rights too, Ollie. And I know when to follow instructions.

Sometimes I push it, and admit it when I get censored or a finger shook in my face for a posting no-no!

Rosario, I truly mean no disrespect to you, or anyone else on this forum, but I would just like to say a few things about this thread.
First of all, I know that you are a fairly new member, and of course your opinion is just as valid as anyone elses, but maybe you don't know the real Ollie. He is one of the most caring, compassionate, helpful people you will find. Of course, he could have ended his post a little differently, and I'm sure the bud didn't help him express his frustration eloqently. But I understand his frustration! I too, like Ollie would never insult, or argue with a woman, and I guarantee you that if someone disrespected you in his presence, he would defend you at all costs, because he does respect women.
As far as what he said about the "arseholes", he is only talking about a very few, and he only said what many are thinking, I'm sure. What a few others do in here on a regular basis is much, much worse than what Ollie did by using that word in a moment of frustration, imo.
The forums here have been very helpful, and informative for me in the past 9 months , or so, and I read most of the posts. In addition KS has been a good source of humor most of the time for me. Evidently, for some, KS is a good source to find someone to pick an arguement with, personally attack others (even women) and whatever else they need to do to satisfy their obsessive compulsive behavior. If someone spoke about my woman, the way a few have been attacked in here, let me tell you, I will travel to kick some arse. This ongoing, non stop ugliness (of just a few) is much worse than a cuss word being used.
Keep reading all the posts, and see for yourself the mentality of the few, and you might even use a cuss word yourself. Maybe, if the "Ban" button was still in use it could save a lot of grief. There is much more I could say, but maybe I've said too much already. Ron

Thanks for the post Boatman, and I didn't mean any disrespect either. I'd prefer to stay out of the politics of the forum. I'm just on here to learn, and on the way have some good discussion. I don't know anything about ANYONE on this forum, so whenever I post, there is NEVER any malice intended. Believe me, I'M NO ANGEL, I was just caught off guard by the post, and thought it should be said. Nowhere in my post was there any disrespect intended.

I think we all cross a line from time to time here with things we post... not always cussing, but flirting a bit rowdy (shame on people who do that!!), and arguing and all that blah blah.

Btw, Ollie, I read it twice and I, too, am still trying to figure out just exactly what you said. :dontknow:

But if Ollie deserves to be reprimanded, then so have about 90% of the rest of us at one time or another. The day someone like Ollie has to leave this forum, well, I think I'd have to put on my walking shoes and join him. I think once he says "sorry", it should be forgotten.

Never to judge or critique you Ollie... just to get to hear you sing:)
