There are predominantly (2) types of Karaoke singers.
Type A is the one who loves to sing, whether they have a great voice or not does not matter. They go out to have fun and if they can talk their friends into a karaoke bar ..great. They may put a slip in by themselves but most of the time they include their drunk friends who can barley read the monitor nevermind carry a tune. Their group and many of the other patrons get a kick out of when they sing. So does the KJ as long as no one is spilling beer or acting like an (@$%!). This type of singer USUALLY gets other similiar types UP to sing also. "A If they can do it so can we attitude". They'll never question the equipment or microphone choices and couldn't tell the difference between DK and SC .... You will never see that KIND of singer on these boards.
Type B is more of the PRO singer, maybe even a KJ in a past or current life. They most likley have their own collections and favorite BRANDS. They also most likely sing at home on a setup or on line etc. They go out to sing also to have fun ....singing. They LIVE for the Karaoke - constantly sitting and watching ..the KJ, other singers etc. They'll notice the types of mics, the type of speakers etc. They'll sit and count the minutes until they sing by who is singing and who they follow. They CARE if they don't sing in rotation and will either bring it to the KJ's attention or complain to their friends who can also be type B but type A is also allowed in their crowd. This type you WILL find on these and many other forums. As a KJ i HAVE TO ADMIT ...Although my life line as a host.... A PAIN IN THE (@$%!)
I'm sorry to admit I TOO am a TYPE B SINGER ....What typ are YOU ???

Jam ten years ago it was type B. It was new and nobody was sure so they all played roles. and unsure hosts hid their lack of confidence behind strict regimentation.
Those that will sing anything and leave their ego at the door gradually find their style and turn into a fairly decent singer and a good entertainer. Those that are still playing the role will hardly improve. As more and more kids that grew up with karaoke in the home reach drinking age it is changing to type A thank god.. Those days are on the wane and karaoke will mature into the best and most economic entertainment for many. I have very good singers that are not obsessed with rotation and actually request dance songs classic rock hop or line dance. If there are people dancing and you cut off fill for karaoke even the singers are griping.

I like the poll and it is going to help better understand where divergent opinions come from on this forum. Once again, I'm sure our opinions reflect our local environments!
Although I listed myself as type A, I do very much care about the rotation; it's just a matter of "fairness". If I am spending money to participate I would like the opportunity to do so on a rational basis and not on the whim of a KJ! If I only sing twice in an evening, and that's the length of the rotation, I'm fine with that!
Oh, I will carry some discs with me to new shows in case I can't find anything I'll enjoy singing. Just as Cueball asked me about specific tracks before he came out to our show for the first time!

Okay, I don't 'live' for karaoke but it has provided me with a great living, though at this time only contributes nominally (not hosting full time anymore). I admit that I have sung professionally as does hubby so really karaoke is an extension of that. I do carry songs in case I can't find something different to sing at a show (I'm not going to sing Fancy...) I have no ego when it comes to my singing. Why worry about what other people think about your singing? In fact, it embarrasses me most often than not when people focus too much attention on me after I sing (you know, the bowing down thing, etc.). I'd prefer just a high 5, and I continually offer high 5s to singers, no matter their skill level. It's all about the fun of singing. Ideally, no contest, no ego, no griping about rotation, though as a host I have always run an EXTREMELY fair rotation so to have a host blatantly screw with the rotation irritates me.
We have probably 70% type B's and 30% type A's at our shows across the board, though possibly more B's during weeknight shows. Weekends definitely bring out the recreational (type A) singers.

I think I'm an A+B- I sing as good as I dance, not saying I'm good but everybody looks & listens...

I am definately a type B, but not as fanatical as B is discribed. I don't LIVE for karaoke, although (it seems like it) lately, now that I'm in the karaoke BUSINESS.
With all the buying this and ripping that, and testing this. I've always liked to sing, and find karaoke as a VERY good way to meet people with a COMMON interest. Actually, I met my girlfriend through karaoke. She also is a type B.
I don't bring my own discs when I go to a show, I'm sure I can find SOMETHING I can sing. If I get to sing a couple of songs, I'm happy.

Can I have a third choice?? maybe type C???
"C" if i can hit that note?? ha ha..Ok,, got that off my chest. I would probably have to put myself into a mild "B" situation. I don't live for it, even tho it's my business. I have way to many other interests, like my family. Or maybe fishing trip here and there. Not to mention my day job is pretty dang important.
But none the less, put me in the "B" list with a green star!

I guess I'm closest to a type A singer, but not entirely. I don't usually sing in groups, though I will try to get OTHERS up.
The fact is, I go to shows with the same attitude as I do when I host: I actually prefer to watch and listen to OTHERS sing.
Oh, I put up slips, but mostly to support the host. I'm one of the few who really don't care if I sing or not, or worry about getting skipped.
However, if I DO put up a song, say, at the beginning of the night, and the host never calls it by the END of the night, it tells me that he/she has some learning to do. I won't get upset, but I'll know the KJ's a schlub...

I doubt that either type A or B likes being skipped. If you go to karaoke, it's because you want to sing a song!
I"m probably closer to type B, but I've never really been into gear. Type of mics and speakers are of less importance--I don't notice them, but I do notice if the sound is bad or if the system doesn't allow me to sing what I'm trying to sing. Hate that! Sometimes my vocal cords don't allow me to sing what I'm trying to sing. Hate that too! The discs I own aren't a huge number, but they are mostly for songs I want to sing that I usually don't find at the karaoke places--songs like Hearts by Marty Balin, All I Need by Jack Wagner, On and On by Stephen Bishop, Time by Alan Parson...
I admit I bought a disc for Moonlight Feels Right by Starbuck just because I wanted a rendition with a good xylophone (since there are some very bad renditions out there, and the xylophone solo part is long, who wants to hear a full minute of bad xylo that sounds like someone beating a stick on a series of tin cans?), but in general the discs I have are across the board, alphabet soup, Legends, SC, Monster, SGB, Priddis, Chartbuster.
For me the most important thing from the KJ is treating everyone equally as far as sound goes. IF the KJ is a great entertainer, that's great. If the KJ is shy and only knows how to spin discs, that's ok too. But if the KJ gives great sound to the group of 5 that just walked in at 1:00 in the morning, while giving other people earlier bad sound...well that is very bad in my book. So KJ integrity is most important to me. After that the sound system is important, but I'm not into mic brands and speaker labels--you know the equipment is good if it sounds good.

I'm an easy going type B. I like to sing, I practise and I notice rotation. However, I act like a type A, because I know what a pain type B can be!

I've noticed that karaoke brings in many more different types... I politely call them....
The Diva: Wants nothing but to sing, occasionally drinks but fond of the cheaper options such as soda and water. Understands and watches rotation, but tends to try and create reasons why they and they alone should be able to break it. Tend to bring their own discs. Talks to other members of the bar to boost their ego or try and gain attention and praise. Can become a regular customer if their needs are met.
The Natural Entertainer: Claps and cheers for other performers, sometimes spends alot of money, somethimes not (usually depending on their finacial situation). They understand and watch rotation, and upset if they are missed out on a regular basis. Talks to everyone in the bar and generally tries to make sure everyone has a good night. May bring their own discs and once again may become a regular customer if the atmosphere is right for them.
The Drinker: May sing depending on the amount they drink, Claps and cheers for the exceptional (or clap and cheer when they remember), sometimes critical of the poorer singers. Little understanding of rotation, unless they choose to sing, and then the wait time may upset them. If they do sing they usually pick crowd pleasing songs. Once again may become a regular customer, but tend to be a customer of the bar rather than the karaoke company.
The picnic basket: (so called because usually part of their sandwiches are missing). Tend to sing to deal with their emotions, often spotted wearing a hat or doing air guitar moves in instrumentals. Talks to other members of the crowd too pour out their troubles of the previous week. Understand and watch rotation. They often don't clap for other singers but usually spend quite alot of money. May bring their own discs, usually filled with obscure slow songs and once again can become a regular if the host is understanding of their emotional needs.
Most people in my area, fit into one or two sections of the above catagory. Ex hosts and current hosts tend to fall into one of the top two on my list.
As for the actual poll, I think i'm like Nlouch... I'm a terrible Type B (I count peoples songs in their book to make sure the amount i have at my show is reasonable ) but I hide it well, from all but my partner... who will sit laughing at me, when another hosts does one of my big no no's, for he knows i'm going to get home and rant.

Marble: Love your categories. But I fit into far too many.
For example - Saturday night. Local big pub that has karaoke every week, and I know the DJ well...
Diva: I love to sing, I notice his rotation, I notice if someone sings a song that's new to his list, I notice singers and mentally think how they could improve, and what they do well. However, I do not like praise as it usually comes off as fake ("You should be on X-factor" - really, no, I sing for pleasure not because I am any decent level of singer). I would never jump a rotation, and moreover I ask how long the list is if I have sung twice, so I don't clutter it.
Entertainer: I always applaud, always "rallyng the troops". Usually the one buying shots to get people in the mood. Always giving props to my peeps - . Always singing things that will get people up, dancing, clapping, smilling or singing along ("Any dream will do", "Aint That A Kick In The Head", "Me & My Monkey"). Love participation songs. Don't bring my own disks, cos I don't feel the need.
Drinker: Certainly put a fair few quid behind the bar - buying shots, buying the host drinks, staff drinks, friends drinks, and getting through a fair bit myself. But never annoying, aggressive or slurring. I know my levels, know how to pace, and if drunk, I leave.

Wow, Marble, quite astute and probably quite accurate. I'm stuggling, though, trying to relate to the "Picnic Basket" and the "sandwich (metaphor?)"

It started when two members of staff used the phrase "he's two sandwiches short of a picnic" to describe one particualar customer....
we then noticed that another customer "had the full picnic, just it was unusable because it was drowned in alcohol"
Others had the "bread to make the sandwiched but lacked the filling to hold it all together" eg nice but dim...
And so our ever growing metaphor continued.... to finally form a group known as the picnic basket.
