Windows 7 is supposed to be Vista with complete compatibility with XP programs from what I am understanding.

OK, I had a problem with Vista and CompuHost and my PowerWheel USB device. Nobody has recreated it mainly because the USB device is pretty rare. It's how Vista deals with active and non active windows. And was an annoyance at most - but still enough to make me use XP for my hosting needs.

I am going to be testing this under 7 out of curiosity more than anything. XP is fine for my hosting needs. Cut down, lite and moreover once my hosting tools are loaded, the OS matters not.

Actually, it's incredibly feature rich. There is no 2nd beta, they plan to go directly to RC.

Also as stated above, it is known to be more compatible than Vista was. It's "compatibility modes" are meant to be much better.

?? Do you mean with the ability to see all the windows on an laid out pattern & you can select the window you want? This feature can be turned off for the more familiar way.

No it's a bit harder to explain than that. It's the technical behavior between focussed and non focussed windows. I shall try to explain but probably go on rambling...

The PowerWheel is an assignable USB dial. Can be assigned to anything.

I assign it to the Winamp volume control. So as soon as compuhost kicks in, I can pull down the Winamp volume without touching the computer's main volume. So even if winamp is minimised, and Compuhost is the focussed applicaton, it will control only the winamp volume. It serves me well.

EXACTLY the same hardware under Vista, same situation... It will only control Winamp if Winamp is the focussed app.

OK so this seems REALLY trivial when written, but we all have our own little ways of doing things. And I 100% am not calling this a flaw of Vista - it's just something that only manifests under Vista.

From experience, I wait at least until SP1 for Windows 7. In case of Vista, I waited until SP2 (because of the "bad" reputation of Vista, kind of like back in the day with ME) and still had to go back to Windows XP because of problems with external sound cards.

Well, just tested Win7 - same "issue" as I had before.

In fairness, I never considered using it for my hosting environment, but was curious nonetheless. I never move to an OS fully until the level of bitching and whining drops - which usually coincides with a service pack.

Having messed with Win7 for a while - and I know there is more to it than I have seen so far - it's a nicer flavour of Vista. An upgrade? Yes. Necessary to someone who is happy with Vista? Remains to be seen...
