Hey everyone

I bought a pair of NX55P's, and they're used but I bought them from a shop. They sounded fine in their warehouse, but i just brought them home to really test them out.

Is it normal to hear distortion/weird noises coming from the REAR of the speaker if you're standing behind it? Of course I don't notice it when I'm in front of the speaker.

Somehow the bass doesn't quite sound right. I had all my adjustments at line level. Maybe it's because they're in a small room?

Sounds like loose screws or something for the distortion on the back. It's usually when the bass is escaping out through the cracks & will rattle it. Try tightening the screws on the back & see if that helps with the distortion from the back.
What does the bass sound like, not enough oomph or kind of washed out?
Try connecting one speaker at a time, does the bass sound change at all? If so, you have a low frequency driver or the crossover internally in one of the cabinets that has been rewired out of phase ie a positive wire to a negative terminal.

Hi Lonman,

I guess it's hard for a person to describe a sound rather than hearing it in person. But maybe I should be asking this: is it normal for the bass to sound different behind the speaker compared to being in front of it? I, obviously know that being front of it is where a person is supposed to be :P I guess the best way I can describe it is that when I'm behind it, it sounds like a blown speaker or something, but in the front it seems to sound fine

I guess the problem is, the shop I bought it from is only open during the hours that I work. Plus, it's kinda far.

ok let's just say a "farting" sound is the best way to put it. I wonder if it's just because that's how a speaker would sound from behind?

Well yes the bass is going to sound completely different from behind a speaker. You will still be able to hear it, but it will sound more muddy.

Again as far as the back sounding distorted, I am saying again, it's probably something loose, try making sure all screws on the back are tight. If that isn't it, you may have a cracked cabinet. You shouldn't hear anything like that while standing behind a speaker.

It's actually common knowledge that this speaker can do this, I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that they have corrected this situation, not sure how, possibly a gasket. I would suggest contacting Yorkville and see what they may do for you. Their customer support is excellent. I'm pretty sure it is air escaping where the amplifier mounts to the cabinet. On the plus side even though air leakage can cause some unique sounds, fortunately it is all to the rear of the speaker and won't be heard in front from what I've read. It's still a great speaker.

Hi Lonman,

Thanks for the information. I should mention that these speakers retail for over $900 brand new each, but I got them for $550 each with no tax.

What I decided to do is to rent one from another local retailer (Long & McQuade) for only $12 for the night and try it out so I can compare it to mine and that way I'll have a better idea if mine are defective or if they're actually just fine the way they are. Also, I read somewhere Yorkville's warranty is 2 year parts and labour, and 10 years for the cabinet itself. I have a feeling that the 2 year warranty may be expired (i'll have to ask the guy I bought it from), so I might be out of luck if it needs repair.. Unless of course they cover the "air leakage" through the cabinet warranty.

Also, I am using a Mackie CFX12 mixer that I recently purchased but never really tried out yet until last night. This type of mixer is something new to me, as you can assign each channel with "SUB 1 and SUB 2" or "SUB 3 AND SUB 4" or both. I know if I assign both, the audio is louder. I wonder if this can be damaging at all or not?

Also, there's so many adjustments: the SUB level adjustments, the channel adjustments, the gain to the channel, the main mix slider (total), and the gain on the speaker itself. I would assume to leave everything at line level and then play around with it a bit. But are there any recommendations?

Thanks again. By the way, I just joined this website last week and I love it

1. Are they the same exact pair that you heard in the shop?

2. Speakers should have a dispersion specification in angles which are usually less than 180 degrees. unless there's something loose I wouldn't be impressed with the sound.

3. Compare the bass from one cabinet to the other in the same position with the same settings. Standing waves can do weird things with sound at high levels in a room. Look up the Golden Ratio in audio to get an idea of this.

Good Luck with your sound Bub.

I've heard this as "honking" which often happens when the port tube is the wrong length and is usually apparent on the front. The sound wave normally travels through the port tube hopefully the right length (tuned) and is delayed but then meets up with the front bass speaker. This is what gives the speaker a lower frequency response. I believe the honking occurs when it is too long. Since you hear it in the back there may be a leak. Just crank up some food for bass and put your hand across the seams and feel for air. There's also a slight possibility that the bass driver is not tightened down in which case it wouldn't sound as loud and "bassy" as the other speaker.

You are absolutely correct about the warranty and I think you would have an excellent chance of having it taken care of as it is technically the cabinet that is contributing to the air leakage. Very good catch.

Send Guy at Yorkville an e-mail. I think he's still there. He is one of their techs. The very few times we had questions, we had a response within 24 hrs and usually the same day. Here is his addy gberesford@yorkville.com. Hope this helps. OK I guess the forum won't allow the e-mail address. I'll send it in a PM.
