Nice if you're a straight DJ, but I don't see any real karaoke functions ( digital keychange for vocals and for music., reverb, delay, etc...) do you have a separate mixer to work with?

I do all the key changes at either the player or PC and the Mackie PPM 608 does have as full and FX suite on it as any other. Two 500w channels out, looks good to me. However I don't use a powered mixer so I am a little less than pro do com on them <shrug>.

The power rating on it is pretty low, it actually only pushes 150 watts into 8 ohms. The 500 watts is PEAK into 4 ohms. Other than that it's a great little mixer/amp.
As far as effects, yes it has them - digital multi effects, key change is usually done through the software or player. Not needed on a mixer for karaoke.

First, good catch on the power rating. I completely missed it.
Although many CDG players now carry onboard effects, they don't carry all of them. Keychange is on music ONLY, for example. Echo and delay work only if one runs the mics through the player (not gonna happen- direct to mixer). A good karaoke mixer SHOULD have everything you need ( although PC shows CAN mix with software). This doesn't mean that mixers without effects are bad, just means that you should add a separate board for full control.

ehm, what!??
I use a Mackie board, no effects, no key change, absolutely NOT necessary!
Key Change, like Lonman said, is usually done by the CD+G Player or the software (if you are computerized). Effects are good and simple to have on the mixer, but if not... I use the Lexicon MX300 and am very pleased with it. Way better effects than most of the built in boards.

It's going to be for straight DJ work, I'm a singer and not a host, although I've filled in for a friend. I currently use the Mackie 406M which I've had for eight years and it has plenty of power for what I do where music is background at best (car shows), it's just getting heavy to lug around and the new one is lighter.

Completely disagree. I have never needed a mixer that had to have key change ability. Since music is all you will be changing, there is no need to change mic key - it would be impossible to sing. Most cdg players & karaoke software today have a key change ability of some sort built in. I MIX with my mixer not software. Why would I need a separate mixer with effects that I don't care for? I use an outboard Lexicon & Alesis effects processor, but have used the internal on my Mackie CFX12 and they are fine. I see no need for a separate mixer on top of another mixer.

For dj work? Well if you are used to how you dj now with the 406M, then this should be more than adequate. And you will actually gain about 40-50 watts per channel with the new board over the 406.

Just go to Mackie, click on your mixer & the specs. It should also be in your manual under the specs section.
http://www.mackie.com/products/ppm1008/ ... _specs.pdf
The 1008 pushes about 250 watts per channel into 8 ohms, & 400 watts into 4 ohms.

well I guess my idea of offering you a screaming deal on my 808s is out the window. ooh well id really rather keep it and sell my 406m. theyre both awesome units. if that new one is as much of an over achiever as the 406m you will be really happy with it.

Those ARE great units, but that 808s probably weighs as much as the 406m I have, if not more. Plus I don't need stereo. At car shows the speakers are usually very far apart and the stereo sound of oldies (Beach Boys) are like multiplexed CDGs...one side has vocals and the other side has the music, so part of the grounds gets words a Capella and the other side gets Karaoke. I've always hated that and endeavored notr to do that at my shows.

Mackie is getting really close to going belly up as a company. They have run out of operating cash and their main manufacuting plant has closed.
I would be very careful buying anything Mackie at this point.

Is there any company that is not going through a hard time right now? I would think most people are cautious now days of where they are spending thier money. One would hope that companys with the best products and quality will survive, but that isn't always the case. But buying Mackie should be just as safe as any......maybe.

The 808 has probably 5-10 lbs on the 406. for your needs I would just run my music into a 2 into 1 adaptor , or run left and right into seperate input channels. If you want to save weight the 808 is of no help to you. I looked at those new powered mixers before i bought the ProFX8. It would have fit nicer in my case than the current one does. I decided that i liked having the board seperate from the amp, and I already had a qsc rmx2450 so it was a less expensive move for me. If you ever find yourself needing more power Im not that far away, and Im a car guy too so id be happy to help out (provided i at least get into the show in the deal)

Not a huge surprised, they have cut their quality over the years and they seem to have a bad press for quite sometime now If you do a search on the net on Mackie, you'll see many forums where people are complaining about the VLZ series (China) and their SM-450 that are not what they used to when they were built in USA or Italy.
I bought a 1402 VLZ-Pro about 2 years ago after having problems with my Behringer and guess what, it's time to sell that mixer, everything I've been reading about this model is true Looks solid but obviously low end parts have been used
Sad, such a respected brand...
