I would have added this to my "Rollover Beethoven thread", but I went back and looked at it and it was locked. No problem, here's a new thread for anyone interested.
If I can't sing a song really well, I won't sing it in public. I practice songs over and over and over until I can nail them. Good thing I enjoy singing or it could seem like work.
Just learned Elvis-Bossa Nova Baby and Neil Diamond-Turn On Your Heartlight.
Rehearsing Elvis-Jailhouse Rock, it's gonna take some practice . . .
I'm gravitating to songs that let me use a raspy quality in my voice which is something I couldn't do when I first started singing Karaoke. I was so timid and smooth. I didn't know how to sing with any intensity. My middle school and high school training in choir taught me to blend in, sing smooth and sweetly. It's taken me a while to try new ways of singing that I had never done before.

Wow, Morgan!
Thats just sick as far as I'm concerned. I mean, your UNDERWEAR!??
What was wrong with those people?
If they tried that in this day and age, at least here in Canada, there would be criminal charges file immediately.
And I must say that those people might find their personal safety in jeopardy.
Yikes!
Now I'll be shaking my head all night, trying to wrap it around this.
BTW, I LOVE your revenge!

Sometimes though, we do Kamikaze rounds and to be fair, I allow them to choose a song for me, too. It's fun though and if you mess up, nobody really cares.

Well when I'm running things, and it's slow enough to slide myself in the rotation, I'm careful to choose songs I know will please the audience. When I got off somewhere else I'll sing what I want like everyone else. I won't do something i *know* will sound awful, but I will be adventurous and collect feedback from ears I trust and come away knowing a bit more than "I liked it" like I do at home

Same here ................but, it takes me a lot more days or weeks and even months of practice to get it right. And I don't give up, I just set it aside for a few months and try again later.

turn on your heartlight , Now thats one that would never cross my mind. Yes i do "sweet caroline" ,"cracklin rosie", and even "Holly holly" from time to time but ive never given that a thought..till now.
When I pick up a new song i just wait till its either slow early on , or late at night when people have filtered out. Im like Nike I "Just do it". sometimes it goes well other times it sucks. No big deal

I like most of you have a list of songs that I regularly can do if time allows, but I am of the opinion that "I'll try anything once, twice if I like it". I have had customers pick songs for me to sing that I had never thought of, and some that pick songs because they think it would be a hoot, because they know I'll try it.
I always looked at it this way, if I can get up and make a fool out of myself with a song, then anyone in the place can get up and have some fun with us.
A lot of songs I can sing well, many I can't, but they are all fun. Some personal favorites are Train, Train and Mustang Sally.
Some of the fun songs are Like a Virgin, and I Feel Pretty.
I don't get embarrased ever, never have so if I can make the place laugh, and have fun, my job is complete.
For example on Halloween you don't often see too many 6 foot 5 225 lb. ballerinas complete with pink tutu. If you were at my place you would have. Not pretty but very funny.
