This should make mckyj57 happy. I finally have some "decent" microphones.
I check craig's list nearly every day. I saw an ad for (4) Sennheiser e835s. I emailed the guy and we made arrangements for me to come over.

He mentioned that he had some other audio equipment so I scrounged up all the cash I could get my hands on. I got there and he had some 15" speakers on stands so I brought my Yamaha powered mixer in to test out the mics. The mics were fine and in near pristine, near new condition.

I got all four e835 mics for $80 total. What a steal, they sell new for $100 each. I bought the speakers for $50 each and as I was leaving I counted up what I had left in my wallet. He had a Peavey PV1500 amp that he wanted $200 for and I was willing to pay that, but I said "all I have left in my wallet is $140" he said "I'll take it" and I walked out with a 500wpc@4ohms amp for $140 and $1 in my wallet.

I used one of my new Sennheiser e835 mics at a senior show I did on Friday and I must say it's a very nice mic. Clear and a pretty hot signal, but not too hot to cause feedback. A good mic like that can actually make you sound better than a crappy mic.

I still like my Nady SP-1, but it does have high handling noise. It makes me sound REALLY good though.

happy for YOU and YOUR purchase Stogie...hope you made it for the right reasons and not to brown nose with someone who walks funny due to the chip weighing him down on one side

OMG, you made me laugh Morgan. :P

No, I knew that those are REALLY good mics. A friend of mine has a sound company that sets up sound systems for events and he has one or two of them so I knew they were good mics. I also talked to a successful local performer recently who's band uses them. I'm sure they're not as common as SM58s, but I imagine they're comparable as far as quality and sound reproduction.

I wanted a Shure Beta 86 or BETA 87, but they go for a lot more money and I've been on a HUGE buying spree lately. I spent almost $300 on some Par 38 LED lights and a bag to carry my speaker stands before New Years, $100 on a little Flip Ultra video camera, a tiny little USB external 500GB hard drive $110, VGA switch box $10, two wireless mics from the DJ at ODJT-$93, Peavey amp $140, pair of 15" speakers $100, Alesis multimix 8 mixer $100, I bought a pair of old Peavey 15" speakers off craig's list a couple of months ago for $65, a pair of EV Zx1 speakers $365 and I am going to buy another external USB 500GB drive as a gift to a friend who has been helping me out. So as you can see I've been spending lots of money lately.

As I mentioned, I also have a couple of wireless microphone systems coming from a DJ over at Our DJ Talk forum. One of them is a Samson VHF wireless system with a SM58 element in the handset. I'm not sure how he did that, but I'm looking forward to trying it out when it comes in the next few days. The other one is an Audio Technica.

As far as microphones, I am set. I won't be buying another mic for a long, long time. The only other mic I might possibly buy would be another Nady DKW Duo for $50 if I start hosting regularly. Those would be my regular Karaoke mics for customers.

BamaRob, I check craig's list constantly and have gotten some awesome deals.

But, it requires vigilance and some time. It also requires you to be ready with the cash and you need to be quick to respond to the ads and then you can't dilly dally. I had a set of speaker components sold out from under me because the guy was in a hurry and he had gotten a bunch of inquiries. They were black widow or scorpion subwoofers and horns from some Peavey SP5s or SP2s, I don't remember exactly. All the parts and pieces to make a pair of speakers for $100 including the crossovers. I was mad when I lost that deal because I have been wanting to build some speakers as a project.

lizard, I like good equipment, I just don't like paying big money for it. I'm just starting out in the entertainment business and until the money starts really rolling in I am going to be looking for deals, deals, deals. I'm getting more bookings and if I go out and agressively market myself I'll be working 5 or 6 nights a week soon. I can hardly wait. I would rather be out working, having a few beers and socializing every nightAND getting paid to do it. I'll have plenty of time to rest when I'm dead.

Stogie, we are in the same boat as you. We are also just starting and will upgrade as we can, with no apologies for where we are now. As previously mentioned, the bar owner dropped our friend's $400 wireless and didn't offer to pay for it so he is getting the Nady's no matter what anyone says.

Anyway, you inspired me to check Craigslist and there weren't any mic deals but someone wants to give away a free karaoke laser disc player complete with a set of 70s and 80s karaoke laser discs. We have an old Pioneer in our system and still drag the giant discs around for the novelty of it so hope your luck rubs off and we get a crack at those. If "Lady Soul" happens to be part of the collection, we will let someone know.
