Is this possible? I've seen a few people mention buying one good speaker as opposed to 2 subpar speakers. When connecting that one speaker to your mixer, would you connect it to the left or the right output?

I think they are talking more for home use, as 1 speaker in a club wouldn't be very effective in most cases.
All you would do is connect it to either the left or right out of your mixer & pan everything to that output.

I have seen a one speaker plus a monitor setup in a club. Of course the one speaker was a Peavey SP5 with Crown xti-2000 running it, so it was putting out the sound. It sounded quite nice, in fact some of the best sound I have had at a show.

The guy that ran it is a long-time musician and sound guy, and he had a compressor and a Peavey mixer with effects, and used either an SM-58 wireless or a Beta58 wired. I wish that show were still around.

Lonman what do you mean by pan everything?

On most mixers there is a pan knob. This will let you pan everything (direct the signal) to either the left, or right, or in the middle so both outputs receive the same signal.

I dropped into a place this past week and was surprised to find the KJ running one speaker. I asked why..."Oh, this place is too small for two speakers. It's just too loud." Well gee, I suggested, why not two smaller speakers and a sub? No need to have it blaring but balancing the sound would be nice. Of course I left because even though there were only a couple of us and the host singing, he persisted in playing an entire song between singers. I believe this setup is probably this pirate's 3 or 4th rig and again has hired someone who really doesn't know anything about sound. But that is typical in this area sadly, and probably why there were only two of us in there interested in singing.

Someone that says 2 speakers is or makes it too loud has no idea how to run sound.

Hell, the smaller the location, the more you can guarantee that you will be able to hear both channels nicely. It is nice to hear two different sounds, coming from two different angles at the same time, the way it was intended.

I use a subby too.

2 speakers is too loud?

That's ridiculous. Tweak your sound to suit.

Less volume from more sources is better than more volume from less sources. It allows you a more even balance aross the room.

I know jack about sound technology, but that's just common sense to me. I may be wrong.

However, what are people's thoughts in running 2(+) speakers, but in mono?

I find that stereo in a large venue is actually detremental...

It can be done to one speaker, and in my experience most people won't notice... twice we've turned up to a gig, to find a faulty speaker, we plugged it in as normal, did a "fake-ish" sound check and pretended all was fine...

we've probably been lucky that we've had no experts about.

we once forgot a "kettle" lead in a venue, and ran off one speaker for the first half hour... whilst we broke the speed limit  (not really) to pick up the missing lead... the customers only noticed something was wrong when we went to plug it in ("oh i thought it was quiet" ).

I've also ran a cabaret off one in a really small hotel... but that was more for space reasons.

It can be done, but I and my staff always notice the difference.

I run a 4 speaker bi-amped full-range setup with Peavey SP5s as the woofers and Peavey PR12s as the highs and mids. Yamaha P5000S powering the SP5s and Crown XLS 602 powering the mids and highs. Sings like a bird and rattles the seats in the back of my 6000 sq/ft bar :)

The Peavey SP5s are a really underrated speaker. I have the older SP5s (like 2002 model) when it was still a bi-ampable speaker. For the price range, you can't beat them as far as bass responce, and the tweeters are more than ample (through I don't use them in my setup). Great woofers, high-end drivers.

I used to swear by Yamaha S115Vs in this price range, but sold them once I got a hold of my SP5s!!

My point precisely. It was like when one front speaker goes out in the car - I feel almost a disequilibrium feeling when one ear goes without sound. Oh, and at that place of course you could NOT hear yourself, which is really a poor situation for inexperienced vocalists who depend on hearing themselves. I had to laugh - two speakers was just too loud. WHAT??????

Frankly I think the guy is doing this on the cheap - he is a multirigging pirate who runs around and gets gigs, puts inexperienced people in to run his shows, doesn't do well, they let him go, and he's off to the next place.

Yes, but that is partly because you can push 800 watts at the SP5 while the S115V only uses 500... 8-)

I might look at the SP5 for my bar rig -- I can bi-amp them or run full-range on a bridged EP2500, which should give them plenty of power. They actually weigh less than the S115V.

Running stereo in most clubs is not beneficial because the speakers just can't be placed where everyone will get the stereo benefit so there is no point.

Yes, you most definitely can (successfully) run one speaker at a karaoke show!

No, you cannot run only one speaker at every karaoke show!

And while Big Dog was, and some others are, confused about this, karaoke should be run in mono. You can't have the music dispersed to one section of the room and the vocal to another!

Now to some real life experience:

There is a company in the area here that runs up to 16 shows a week; each utilizes just one speaker and a "trained seal" that runs the show for $75 per night. Most of these shows are in smaller venues, just like the ones I successfully use my Fender Passport at. In fact, the owner of the company I am referring to "stole" one of my first gigs by promising that he could double the crowd (which he never did)!

In smaller venues, his system works and if it didn't, he wouldn't be the most successful karaoke business around here! In a couple of larger (not large) venues they play, the sound is just barely workable. Though they did get lucky in one instance -- the owner at a large outdoor (patio) show wouldn't let them use more than one speaker because of complaints from the neighbors! In another, they were able to use the house system.

BTW, patio shows with neighborhood complaints is something I've heard of 3x in the last 5 years.

In another instance, that company had to set up the show in a particularly small area, no more than 10 ft wide. Through that narrow area, passage had to be provided to the bathrooms. In that circumstance there is simply no room for two speakers.

EDIT: There was also another show I frequented where there were two speakers, ... one was basically behind the other.

And...I almost forgot this.... an associate of mine an my partner just started her own company (used to work for someone else). She had gotten ripped off on her used speakers purchased from a "friend". When her speakers blew, she borrowed my partner's 12" QSC's and loved them. When the "friend" didn't make good on getting her speakers repaired, she bought 1 QSC that she's been using since (in small venues)! She does plan to purchase that other but hasn't in over four months! Oh... and she has a gig six days a week
