Post subject:  who owns the rights to sweet georgia brown CDG background tracks
I work with a singing group and they want to record an CD. I have contacted Sound Choice for thier recording fees for use of thier track, but I can't find Sweet Georgia Brown. I heard they are out of business. If they are do we have to oay roalties for the use of thier tracks. I know we need to pay the songwriter for use of the song. I just want to do things right.

Good luck finding out who owns SGB - they are pretty much black market underground. You would be better off finding out who owns the actual copyright of the original song & the publishing rights & obtaining the propers that way.

Really I did not know they are black market.

I do know the rights to the songs can be licenced through companies like Harry Fox, but the right to use the background track has to be licenced by the company who produced the track.

Sound Choice charges $150.00 per song for the licence to record a single track, you do get a copy of a master recording disc for that price. But some of the tracks are better on the SGB discs.

I was kind of curious on how this whole thing works, so I did find out, that you don't need to ask anyones permission for using a backing which the company is out of business OR did not pay the rights in the first place for recording the song :roll: If I were to use a SC backing of which they have never paid for the rights, well, too bad for them, they can't charge me if they are illegal them self :roll:

$150.00 per song and you get the master with SC? Interesting, thanks for the info :wink: I'm sure their master would be more appropriate for a studio recording than their cdg disk!

Sound Choice also said if you want 10 songs or more then the cost is only 100.00 per song. You have the right to make as many copies you want. However the right to the songs are kinda cheap Harry fox charges 15.00 per song to record up to 2500 copies of the song then you need to pay more. But for a new artist 2500 copies is a lot.

Musical Creations karaoke recordings are for personal use and live performance.
If you would like to use a Musical Creations
accompaniment in a recording studio to create a CD,
you will need to lease the tracks from us.
Leasing fee is $100 per song, or $35 per song
for three or more songs. Leasing a track entitles you to a
digital master for use in another recording studio. This fee
does not cover royalties from the original writers and
publishers, which you will still be responsible for.

Have you considered doing actual music rather than karaoke tracks? There's about a zillion great songs out there that no one will ever hear and musicians are a dime a dozen. Just a thought....

Yes I have but I live in a small town and the cost of getting any good musicians to come up from Tampa, 50 miles, and the hours untill they get it right and the post production mixing is mind boggling. The group wants to do in on the cheap. $2500.00 for everything including 1000 CD's The only way to do that is with background tracks.

Dealing with Harry Fox, the songwriter or record company, (who may own the master), doesn't mean you will get permission to use a song.

A lot fo the karaoke tracks are derived from MIDI and softsynths, which in today's world, there are a lot of free resources out there.

[font=Lucida Console]AUDACITY[/font] recording freeware has the ability to play MIDI, and use VSTi "soft synths" or MIDI sound libraries (lots of free ones out there check www.kvraudio.com). These are good for drums, keyboards, strings, but a real guitar and real singers do a better job.

My opinion of SGB discs are they are terrible sounding ... dull, not properly EQ'd, etc. That's why you can find them for $5 at some places, especially online www.doowop.com They're the best
