Post subject:  Wireless Mics on the way out?
I bought a paid of wireless mics about a year ago. They have performed well, and the quality is just fine.

Recently one got dropped, and it is now ever-so-slightly quieter than the other - but this can easily be compensated for.

However, they also have had the wear and tear of customers tapping/hitting/yelling/blowing on them...

They are beginning to sound a bit distorted - as if turned up too high.

Are they basically on their way out and time to replace them?

And also, how can I address these issues. I mean, an idiot will hit a mic, cos he's an idiot.

The shure wireless have a lifetime warrenty, right Lonnie?

I will admit if I ever went more than part time, I'd probably look into those!

The longest warranty I know of from Shure is two years. Dynamic Mics do not fatigue, some of the reason's for loss of performance might be attributed to bad mic cable and or mic snake. Loose or corroded XLR connector on the mic itself. Inspect clean and tighten if necessary. Loss of magnetic field strength due to mic being dropped. Clogged foam on grille.

These are wireless, not wired.

Will take apart and check again, but looked fine.

I just wondered if the damange from tapping, dropping, etc was to blame.

I'll be honest - they are a cheap (£90) pair from eBay.

I KNOW I need to spend more to get "decent" mics - but 99% of my customers couldn't care less, and just want to hear their voice while holding something vaguely cylindrical.

I do not expect miracles from them, but just saying that they have (over the last few months) just started distorting more.

Please don't go on at me about quality of mics anyone. I KNOW! And it's not like *I* don't care. My customers don't care.

The reason I asked is that I was wondering if they were KAM's

I've had two sets in the past year, (four mics)...

1. Fell to the floor from 3ft, and refused to work, though the reciever did realise it was switched on
2. Distorted so badly after six months I had to throw it way
3. Would switch on, but the reciever wouldn't reconise it
4. Still working. . . Just :wink:

If it is the KAMS I think it's a matter of replacing them... they are just poorly made, but at that cost you can't really complain...

PS. My customers love them too, but following advice from mckyj57 i'm hopefully going to re-educate them. . .

Oh on another note...

I often say something along the lines of "I wish my partner would bang me that hard, I'd quite like it... unlike my mircophone"

My partner, quite often goes into a faux paniced voice "don't do that that the boss will kill me if she has to replace them!"...

I've also walked up to repeat offenders (that i know well) and started tapping them on their heads... just to see how they like it. :lol:

I also (whilst waiting for singers to walk to the stage) remind people to "treat the microphone as though it's a ...ummmm... eeerrrr... how do i say this..... LOLLYPOP... Hold the shaft, not the head and sing into it..."

They aren't the KAMs. But I know the models you speak of, and I think they are the same hardware inside, as they are similarly prices and featured.

At £70 a year, I don't mind replacing them tho. I have so many drunks on certain nights, I don't feel inclined to spend more.

I you buy shure mics. The company will refub the handheld for $115.

My Shure mics have been dropped, thrown, and banged off tables and still work as good as the day I bought them. it's worth the $400 to $500 to buy good mics.

We are going to be putting some PGX2/SM58 mics in service at my club soon. The standard SM58 grille fits, so if those get dented you can replace them for $5.00 apiece.

We also will continue to have the AKG WMS40 pair, which have been over a year now without any damage at all. We do have a real good clientele, but they do get tapped on, blown on, and dropped. They are surprisingly durable. For $310 the pair (refurbs) they were a great buy. They sound markedly better than the Nady, Kam, and VocoPro of the world and get a no-kidding 30 hours on a single AA battery.
