Post subject:  Lighting Effects

Hey everyone, I am looking to add the realm of Lighting Effects for my setup. Mostly I run a KJ show, but recently people have been asking about me running like 2 hrs of DJ and 2 hours of KJ for private events. I am looking to add a lighting system, but am not sure of the coverage and amount of lights I would need to be functional for a dancefloor of about 50 people. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to start out minimal and upgrade with the gig money that I make . Thanks

Jay

My starting point would be some par 56 lights, the par 38 would be to small, par 64 I believe would be over kill.I don't know if you want to run one light stand or two for now I'm gonna say two. I would have 4 par 56 on each stand, so you have controll of the lights I would use (and I use this in my band) the FC-400 foot controller which come with one dimmer pack(you would need another for the second stand) The FC-400 can run scenes which you set and has 12 differnt chase modes that run from music or program. Also you can dim the lights from full on to barely on.

This should give you a good foundation to build on just add some spinny Mcbobs and some twirly birds and you should have a decent display of lights.

If you want 8 par cans per stand you would have to go with the DP-DMX-20L this pack will take 8 par cans.

I did dj 2 wedding reception for friends and had 6 Par 38 and 2 par 56 on each stand (2 stands) with one crystal or gem light on each stand and wished I would have had 4 par 56 on each stand. With th fc-400 controller.

You know what? I spent about £300 on lights (which I consider to be a low amount compared to a lot of people) and yet people come and tell me how they look so much better than most other KJs and DJs.

I run:

4 x SoundLab Moonflowers
2 x Double Derby
1 x Red/Green laser
1 x Red/Green starcloth

Go with the RGB Led's and a controller. You can create your own light show on the fly. You can get many colors out of one light and also have a strobe effect.

I hate fancy lighting at karaoke, I find it annoying. I find when I do weddings, people like the lights that actually do some something, like strobes, moon flowers, revolving, rotating, lasers...etc....but to me, lights that just hang there, and do nothing, suck, and are a waste of energy...... :)

Spend a little extra an go ith LED lighting. You'll have to spend about $50-$75 extra on each piece you buy, but you'll probably never have to replace any bulbs and they run very cool, so you'll never burn down a reception hall.

All you need to start off is a set of wash lights and one effect lighting, like a moonflower or something. Here is what I have right now. It is plenty for a dance floor up to about 40' x 40' as long as the room lights are dimmable. I bought some lighting clamps and clamp them right onto my speaker stands.

The best light show at the lowest price.

2 washes - Chauvet Colorpallette 200b

1 Effect - Chauvet Vue 4.1

And you will need some type of controller.

I run with:

ADJ Mini-Gressor
ADJ Gobo-Flex
Chauvet LED Moonflower
Chauvet CH155 Color Bank
ADJ Dyno-Fog II
ADJ T4 Controller
ADJ LTS-1 double row light stand

This is about $700 worth of lighting equipment. Whith This you can put on a great light show. Don't listen to the guy recomending par lights, a complete waste of time for a DJ light show.

I am not advertising my business, you can see my lights at http://www.felixthekj.com/System_Components.php.

Most of my private parties are about 50/50 DJ and Karaoke, not 100% karaoke like most of the people here.

Well my 2 pennies for what it's worth. I agree that I don't like alot of lighting at karaoke. Now I have used four washes during karaoke Par 64 LED.
I normally reserve lighting for weddings, dances, and private parties.
I too think LED is the only way to go with DMX, you can preprogram everything, and just push buttons during the event, and look like a genius
If the pic comes through, here is what I use for right now. Not the best pic, but you get the idea.

Just nuke the "." at the end. He got all proper on punctuation and it carried over into the URL.

Post subject:  Re: Lighting Effects

I just started a new karaoke show, and the owner is interested in some type of lights. I'm thinking about a mirror ball, with different color spotlights. Also, I saw cosmo balls, (2 colored spinning balls), are they any good? I'm just looking for a few ideas, is a Starsphere better than a mirror ball, or are they 2 different animals?
Not looking to go to dj, not looking for Saturday Night Fever. Any suggestions to ENHANCE the karaoke experience? If you need more information, let me know.

Thanks

For best coverage and only using one light.

They are no longer in production, so you need to find it on Ebay - A Martin Acrobat

If you want something new a Chauvet Vue III would be the wat to go.

When I send guys out with only one light this is what they use.

I use two Chauvet COLORSTRIPS linked together Im going to get 2 more. go to youtube there are videos of them there, I used 5%window tint to calm down the brightness, they are LED and only pull 33 watts but are almost as bright as the sun and darn rugged, easy to haul ,lightweight and are programable, also comes with great preprogrammed settings that are sound activated , for $250.00 a piece they are less than you will spend when you have to replace any par can bulbs.
