How many times have you had flickering words and a melody going in your mind and you cant think of the artist or titleto save your life? Or had a singer come up wats that song about a pawn shop on the corner?

Its possible to google lyrics "7y787y" and find it eventually but I wish I could do it stand alone on the show computer.

Whats stopping me from what? I gave you a challenge and get an insult...

I supply another laptop that is available for search of my database or online for downloads and can google. Do you not understand the post? Roxbox has a feature to find "like" songs but I would like a search engine to search for certain lyrics and realize the immense data base required without internet access.

Ninety percent of the time it deals with chorus only.

Ignore him. It is a data problem, not a programming problem.

Given the data, it would be trivial to do. But that is why Google is so powerful -- it can pull data from all sources together.

It is much more effective just to connect to the Internet and do it.

personally I wouldn't waste my time. I can't tell you how many times I wasted my time looking for a song that doesn't exist by anything close to the title the customer gave me, or looking for the song by an artist that never sang it.

If they want to sing a song, they can figure it out on their own. I often use other customers who listen to the same genre as ther person is requesting. None of us have everysong ever made, and though I know many more songs than most people, I can't name every tune in two notes, or two words of they think is the courus.

The people who make these request are often not a serious singer. They often have a table of friends, that are trying to get them to sing. They use the KJ doesn't have the song I am looking for as an excuse not to give in to the pressure of the group.

I have 18,000 songs total. That is alot of songs. Most of these request, I have found, are usually of songs that just don't come out on Karaoke.

My 2 cents,
Felix the KJ

With a desire to keep ahead of the competition I can access my my KJ/DJ library from a mainframe at home via the internet and supply DJ/KJ formats. I have 13k legal karaoke and about 10 DJ . Is it legal? THey better start updating laws for the 21st century.

I usually google the chorus lyrics if I know them. At the venue, they are wireless, so there is a computer nearby that I could do if from. Sometimes I might ask a couple of people in the crowd that I know are musically inclined. For a laugh, you could hum or sing it between singers to see who can yell out the song title first.

BTW, the song about the pawn shop on the corner is called "Pawn Shop" by Sublime. I think.

That is the name of the song, and I believe it does not come on any Karoake disc.
There are only 5 songs by sublime out.

Santeria
Date Rape
Wrong Way
What I Got
Bad Fish

Here's the problem I see with this solution:

How many times a year do you run into this problem with club patrons?

Not enough to warrant writing the code to do it.

Not enough to worry about having internet connectivity at a club during a show.

It's fine for a patron to be inquizitive, it's another to think you have to accomodate every possible "what if" whim that is possible to dream up.

Just because you "can" connect to the net, look up a song by some obscure lyrics or chorus doesn't mean you really should.

This simply adds to your tasks and it's like putting the monkey on your back all by yourself.

IMHO: I wouldn't do it... not worth the hassle..

If I don't know it, I will google it on my blackberry if I'm not too busy. I see no reason to accommodate a simple request if they are being polite.

No insult was intended. I seem to remember that you said you had a degree or a minor in computer science so I assumed that the "challenge" would be no challenge for you. The search program would be a no brainer but gathering the database, OY!

I'm with Chip on this... not worth the hassle.

In my eight years of bein a KJ, it's only happened three or four times where someone doesn't know the song... but they have the melody or the chorus.

Only time it's seriously come up is when they put in "The Joker" by Steve Miller, only to realize they wanted the song "Space Cowboy" because of the lyrics "They call me the Joker..."
