A friend has a set of Peavey Spx5 15" for sale, how do these compare to a set of Peavey PR 15's for sound. I like the Lightness of the PR15's. I will be runnning a Sub,so that should help out with the lows which the PR15's are light on.

I assume you meant Peavey SP5s. The SP5s blow away all speakers in the $300-400ish price range for bass responce and they have above average high/mid sound. The Peavey PR series are way above average in high/mid sound, but lacking in bass responce due to the molded plastic cabs.

I happen to run a bi-amped full range setup with 2 SP5s running the lows and 2 PR12s running the highs/mids, and I would highly recommend this configuration. Buy the SP5s from your buddy, then save up for some PR12s ($150 each) and a decent crossover (Behringer Super-X $80.00). Run it in 2 way full range mode with the highs and mids going to the PR12s and the lows going to the SP5s crossed at 120Hz.

Make that two votes for the SP5's. With the SP5 you gain twice the power handling, you get a 15" scorpion verses the mystery two inch voice coil neodymium driver in the PR15. You also get the RX22 compression driver in the SP5 which is superior to the 14XT in the PR15 and a Baltic birch enclosure verses a plastic one, and it only weighs 14 pounds more. I'm pretty sure I'd go with the SP5 assuming your friend is asking a reasonable price.

He's asking $300.00 for the pair,I think I could get him down to $250 for the pair.Still sound like a deal at the high price?

I'll third the sound from the Peaveys - They are GREAT sounding with with a deep bass (when properly powered)

They are just F-in HEAVY LOL

I think NEW they are running about $399 each now
$250 for the paid used seems fair

They cost roughly 350 to 400 each new. I'm guessing they are six to ten years old. If they haven't been beat to death they would be worth the 200 to 300 for the pair. Listen to them first though. Make sure everything is in order. Do you know what he used them for? They are a little heavier than I first thought coming in at about 70 lbs each. The new version is 56 pounds, so we'll assume that the SP5X is not made out of Baltic birch.

Got the speakers home, the are marked SP5X. Loaded with the Scorpions. This are the same as your all talking about? They are listed at 69 lbs. These were used in a 3 person band and are in great shape.

I can't speak for everyone, but it's the speaker that I supplied the link to in my earlier post. I think you will like the sound from the SP5X compared to the PR15. As long as everything seems to be in order and they appear to have some life left in them it looks like a pretty good deal to me. I would test them at different volumes. Sometimes you can detect toasted voice coils at lower levels if you listen carefully.

One thing nice about the drivers in those cabs if they are bad or going bad is you can buy replacement baskets for the low drivers & diaphragms for the high drivers much cheaper than getting replacement drivers assembled.
