Post subject:  Behringer 1832 fx

hi all wondering if any one can give me some advice on setting to use on this mixer, mainly for karaoke but will be playing normal music for disco to.
I will be running it with a Kam Ka400 amplifier which i was using on its own but need more mic inputs so got this mixer and the kam ims pro 15s speakers.
Also using the 2 kam mics 1940 and VocoPro UHF5800 which is the 4 mic wireless set although you proberbly know that .
i know it depends on venue but if anyone as got so good general advice on effects and and where to set as a basic rule .
One other thing ive noticed a bit about these compressor machines as i do get quite a few singers that are low then high and vice verser. now my queston is how would this connect with 6 mics on the go?
I know its alot of questons but thanks in advance
And a great site
Roy

Roy,

I use the same mixing board, and love it to pieces. If I take it right, you are under the impression that it has a compressor? If so, that's not correct, I added a DBX compressor just last night, and it made a world of difference. I highly suggest hooking one up.

As far as the effects go, I use the onboard effects in the mixer. Seems to do everything I wanna do. For the most part of the time, I set the effects knob to "4", (sorry, can't remember what its called, maybe small hall???), turn up the amount to about a third of the way up, and turn all the mic's FX setting to about the mid point.

My suggestion is just play around and have fun with it, you will find some things that you will get a kick out of, (try 49,,,turned all the way up,,,hehe) and then recite Lou Gehrigs retirement speech,,,,,"Todayayay I Feelelelell likekeke the luckiestiestiest mananana in baseballballballball"... REALLY FUNNY STUFF!

Good luck!

hi mrscott thanks for the reply.
and no i knew it didnt hava a compressor built in was saying i had see them and if they worked well on karaoke and if so how you go about linking one up to work with having 6 mics attached.
Also for the mixer its self ,have you or anybody else used that mixer for karaoke ,i see there is the effects dial then fx send and the effects on each mic and so on ,so just wanted to be sure i get it set up round about from the word go .it could be tweaked from that as i go on.
thanks again

I bought the DBX 266XL compressor. I had a friend help me hook it up, he knows much more about sound than I do. One thing he told me, and it makes sense, you don't want to compress the entire "sound", only the mics, so it has something to do with the AUX sends and returns. We set the aux knobs on the mics to about a third of the way, and turned on the "pre" switch just below the same knob. And then set up the cables , sorry dunno how he did that, and thats the important part too. It was dark and it was the first time I used it. But as far as effects go? they still worked the same as before. Like I said, I use "4" on the FX knob, and turn it up about a third of the way. The FX send on the individual mics I believe are now the same knob as the "pre" , since we turned that one on. Sorry , so confusing on my part. He helped me set it up, while I was hosting a show, so wasn't able to give him my full attention.

Good luck,

Scott

Sounds like he is going out the aux to the compressor and then returning it via another channel. That is the only way to do 6 mics on a dbx266xl or the like. Normally, most of us just compress the main vocal mics, two channels, using the channel INSERT and an insert cable. Then you let any extra mics remain uncompressed.

Using the Aux send/return loop (even going through another channel) will not work for a compressor. The Aux send signal is in parallel to the actual signal so it would not affect it. In order to compress 6 mics, you would need 6 separate compressors or 3 dual channel compressors like the dbx 266XL or 1 4 channel & 1 dual channel like the dbx 1046 quad compressor.
Use the inserts on the main mic channels, then for the channels without inserts run in line - mic-compressor-mixer.

Sure it will -- if you don't send any signal at all from the mic channels to the main, relying on the return for 100% of the signal.

It would be odd to do it that way, but it could be done. If you had group assign buttons for the mics, you could de-select the ones for main, then use the post-fader aux to change the level of the individual mics.

It wouldn't work very well plus you would need 12 individual inputs for the 6 mics he's looking to compress. 6 for the mics, 6 for the returns.

Nah, you would send them all out the aux send and return via one channel. In essence, treating all mics channel like an effects sidechain. Again, it would be very odd to do it that way. But it sounds like what his friend did, if it is using the aux.

mckyj57 and Lonman thanks on the input.
Ive not got a compressor as yet just getting the info as to if its worth buying one ,between you 2 lol still not sure on the 6 mics but most of the time its only 1 and 2 mics being used so if it is that i can only connect the 2 i dont think it would be a big problem.
mrscott thanks also on the other info

Although I haven't picked up a channel strip compressor yet that's the way I was thinking about doing it. I've had intermittent static problems with the 1/4" TRS connectors for insert duty on my Mackie 1402. I'm not a big fan of 1/4" TRS in a club environment anyway.

The 1832 (which I'm currently using in my home room) also has a dedicated monitor send with it's own fader which I also thought I might try since I'm not using it. But one way or the other I'm still thinking about ganging all the mics together through one compressor channel.

Except for mine. ;)

Mickey,,,

I think that is exactly what my friend did. Seems to work just fine. I use three of my mic channels all the time, and he told me if I ever wanna add more, (there are six total available on the 1832fx), just set the pre the same way, and turn the knobs to match the others, and that'd do the trick. At my show Tuesday night, there is a "screamer", and it toned her down to a quite tolerable level. Wish there was a "tone leveler" for all the people who sing off key,,,hehe,,!!! Kidding ya know

a change of thinking of getting rid of my kam kka400 amp mixer plus kam EQ and replacing with the Behringer EP2500 EUROPOWER for £229 and getting the Behringer MDX4600 Multicom Pro-XL for just over £80 as i think the amp is underpowered .on my Kam IMS Pro15 speakers

It's got a better rep. I find the Behringer works OK, myself -- I own a 2600. But you will have better resale value on the 266.
