 Post subject: Lexicon MX-200 ... 101?

Can someone give me a 101 lesson on the MX-200. I'm going to introduce it into my mix for the first time tomorrow night. I'm going to run independent channels with a return.

What's the WET gonna give me?
What is the TEMPO button used for?
What is a good standard setting to use to get decent vocals?

Wet signal is that which has been processed. Full wet means essentially that the entire signal is processed, not part. This is what you do when coming from an FX send and passing back to a return. You use partial wetness when you are processing and returning a signal to in Insert or in a sidechain.

Tempo is just one of the settings for various effects, and the function can change based upon what program is in. It usually adjusts the amount of a delay or the periodicity of a reverb, so it is important. I vary it a bit based on room and song.

I use sets of five settings based upon the following presets:

1 -- Big Pop Vocal -- this is an excellent karaoke reverb that you can vary to a small amount to keep the good singer's voice character, to a lot to paper over the poorer singer's voice.
24 -- Nashville -- an excellent plate that is very good for country.
21 -- Big Vocal Verb -- I use this for Journey and other rock ballad types that want that large-hall sound.
34 -- Slapback -- for oldies, i.e. 50s & 60s.
23 -- Big Easy -- lounge lizard music. Don't use this much.

They are in my user space presets 1-5, 11-15, 21-25 with varying tempo settings for small, medium, and big rooms. (Roughly).

The neat thing about presets is that you can load them, play with them, and not worry about them affecting the next song as long as you reload the preset again.

The tempo button is so you can tap sync to the song so the effect is in perfect sync. Like in Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb - You can tap it so the singer only sings "Hello" once, but the effect will repeat (provided you have the delay setting selected) & will continue on in sync as fast or as slow as you tap.

I love that tap tempo button, makes it so much easier to get good delay/echo.

Lately I've been liking preset #38 tape chorus for a more pronounced, warm but clean delay/echo effect.

What cables are needed to connect the MX unit to my mixer? The guy at Guitar Center steered me wrong.

Equipment:

Mackie CFX-12 mixer
VocoPro UHF 3800 (Dual Wireless Mics)
MX-200 Vocal Processor

Use:

I'd like to pass the two mics through the MX, then to the mixer for output. I'm assuming this is a standard application of the device.

There are left balanced XLR outputs on the back of the VocoPro receiver (female) and right and left ¼" inputs and outputs on the MX. The mixer channels have both ¼" and XLR inputs, plus a ¼" INSERT jack.

Do I run XLR from the mic receiver to ¼" in the processor, and ¼" from the processor to the XLR or ¼" on the mixer channels? Does a Y cable come into the equation at all?

I like the MIC/receiver to go into the mixer on a channel with fader, to get the unprocessed vocal signal to the mixer.
Then use an aux send out on the mixer to left (mono) of MX200 via one 1/4" TRS cable. If nothing is plugged into the right MX200 input, the left input is used for the right in most routing options (saves a cable and another aux send).
Then stereo (L&R) out of the MX200 via two 1/4" TRS to a stereo or 2 mono mixer channels with fader, to control amount of effect mixed in.

I disagree with this methodology.

If you do what I suggest, you will have what looks like Y cables, but which are really insert cables. You just insert the MX200 into the mic channel. (I presume the Mackie has an insert jack on mic channels.) The cable is:

This is only needed if you plan on using the compression / de-essing features of the MX200. If you are just doing effects, then you should use the FX send and return method. That just wants three TRS-->TRS patch cables (TS-->TS would work too).

I have two of the Y cables (shown in your link). I'm just looking for effects at this point. If I went full tilt ... the Tip and Ring ends, where are these inserted, specifically? Does it matter? and for effects only ...

Do I run this method ... XLR from the mic receiver to ¼" in the processor, and ¼" out from the processor to the XLR or ¼" on the mixer channels?

No, what you do is, you run the mics to mixer channel. You don't use the INSERT for the Effects Processor. You use the EFX Send and Return to go to the Effects Processor and back. This way, you can add Effect to any Channel independent.

The INSERT is usually used for a Compressor.

I use mic insets to the compressor then lexicon and return. For the BBE and Aphex I use main inserts.

I had a compressor, and I used the Y cables for that application.

I've added a crop of my mixer EFX send. I don't see a return, do I use the stereo return?

All I need are some ¼" TRS cables then, right? Or the Y Cable? If so, which ends go to which connections? I'm not electronically inclined. :)

Use stereo efx 2 return. It has a separate return cntrl I dont remember without looking at the mixer if 1 does or not.

It isn't a Y cable, it is an insert cable. You would only use that to the INSERT on the mic channel. Save it in case you decide to use a compressor.

Connect EFX send to the Left/Mono Input on the MX200. Returning from the left/right to the EFX2 return. All with 1/4" TRS or TS cables.

Used the MX-200 for the first time on Wed. I used the Nashville (26?) most of the night. Seemed to be the best sound for how I had it configured.

What to do with the three knobs in the middle? PreDelay, Decay, and Variation? How do you have them set?

Should I have both channels at full Wet? Is the #1 preset the best?
