Post subject:  Suggestions for Handy Dandy Laptop/Mixer/Accessory ATA Case?

Hello,

I am looking for as special case for my KJ system that uses powered speakers and monitors. I have seen one place on Ebay that has them ($259 - $400), but I wanted to see if I can find a better source.

I want a case that will (at least) hold my yamaha MG124cx mixer, and a laptop on a sliding shelf, that can call be enclosed (including the lappy) when the box closes. This will allow everything to remain connected.

I would also think about maybe a slightly larger rack that could accomodate the above + a video scan converter, video distribution block, perhaps an external HD and mic or 2 (these all might be able to fit on a single shelf), and a single rack mounted drive.

I am looking for something relatively small, light, and mobile, that I could leave completely hooked up, just run the speaker cables and a single power cord out of it and I would be in business.

Any suggestions?

I have a funny way of thinking of things other people are already thinking about.

I have a quote request into Philly Cases (www.phillycase.com) . I will let you know what I hear back.

BASICALLY, what I really need, is something for a laptop and mixer. I rarely have singers bring in CDGs, but when I do, my laptop drive plays them fine.

So I asked for something that would hold a standard (15") laptop, and a mid-sized mixer on a pop-up shelf, while leaving space underneath for a power strip, and possibly the video scan converter, video distribution device, and maybe even a dual wireless mic controller.

Then I could tie the cables together and simply run out my speaker, video, monitor, and mic cables. I thought it might be similar to a guitar case with a pop-up in the middle, about 6 inches available above and 6 below. I might need a velcro strap for the stuff on top. I told them PVC or Plywood, I don't care, the lighter and cheaper the better.

I will let you know what I hear.

Same mixer here, laptop, I also have 2 wireless mic receivers, furman power conditioner, and would be nice if it could be set up right from the floor or on small table/stand and possibly hold the speaker and mic cables. I have powered speakers as well including a powered sub. Needs to be lightweight as possible, small as possible, and affordable as possible. Of course whistle dixie and make espresso as well!

The last two are optional.

I just picked up one of these from SKB...the "Mini Gig-Rig".

Now, it's larger than I thought it would be, but I love having everything in one rack. It has 6U of space in front, plus the pop-up area for a laptop or mixer....I have a Mackie mixer mounted there and it works well. They also make a 10U version.

Thanks Barry,

That looks like a nice product. I was actually hoping for something that would have a popup that is approximately double that size, to hold both a mixer and a laptop, and carry them both securely with accessories.

I don't use a laptop in my system, but a minitower instead. The problem with the SKB cases is that you only get really one choice of width; 19" or wider, and frankly, I'm not that wide myself.

So we simply designed our own cases that are 16" wide and the top box is only about 85 lbs. Only 4 outside connections.

That is a very well-thought out case system!

I use laptop as a backup and I have a metal drawer that fits in to the 19" rack. My main system is a 3U, rackmount computer that I built it myself.

I put a 802.11n so I can access any updates at a very high speed without an Ethernet cable. I have a Maya 44 sound card for audio. I use NVIDIA graphics card, I think it's an 8800, to take out both the main screen and singer screen. The singer screen goes through a converter, which has both VGA out and S-Video out. I use the VGA through signal to use the LCD singer screen and S-Video is for a larger TV I may have access to.

Here is a picture of the rack.

Since I have a lot of rackspace, I put the input/output connector on a 1U semi-custom panel. You can see it here.

This panel is newer than the rack picture above, I changed a few things and works out better. I haven't finished labeling them yet. I think you can fit everything you need in to the rack that is shown above. I have a few rackspace I can do without but makes life easier having everything in one rack. However, transporting the rack is not easy. It's heavy and bulky, just have to plan ahead.

There is nothing conventional out there for the op set up. I have the same set up. I spent some time at a karaoke shop today going thru Odyssey catalog and talking to the area expert. I think I'm just going to buy a keyboard stand and get a top for it and go that route. Much cheaper than a customized that would cost $400 or probably much more.

As someone said, you could get the larger one and put the laptop on a slide-out shelf.

They also make these outrigger shelves that would work well for a laptop. LINK

Of course, if you have the money, nothing beats a custom Anvil case. 8)
