Post subject:  No Microphone Monitoring In Vista??

I have been using Compuhost on my Vista machine for awhile now. I have been running all of the vocals through a separate stereo receiver as I for the life of me can't configure a microphone in vista so that I can hear the person singing on the mic as well as the music.

On my Vista machine I am using a digital out to a Denon receiver. The playback I am using is the Digital out. The recording device is the line in because for some reason when I select USB Microphone it won't pick up any sound. When I record, I am only able to record the vocals and no backround music. I can't hear myself while I am recording.

I am using a USB mic and I have a Realtek High Definition soundcard.

I am losing my mind, this shouldn't be this hard!!!

I see that my post is getting lots of views but no replies. Is it impossible to monitor a microphone for karaoke in Vista?

You need to route the signal from your mixer (or in your case the receiver you have the mic plugged into) "Record/Tape Out" port to the "line in" port of your sound card. You can do so with a Component (typically two RCA connectors) to single Mini-phono plug cable. This will allow the entire mix (what your audience hears) to be recorded. Once you have the components properly connected, be sure to select "Line In" within Compuhost. Also, from within Compuhost, for portability, I'd suggest selecting MP3 as the destination format and the highest sampling rate your device supports (in the drop-down list).

Good luck

It's because we have exactly no idea what you are trying to accomplish. No one here ever "monitors a microphone" on their computer. We might try to record a song -- is that what you are trying to do?

Thanks tbreen for understanding what it is I am trying to accomplish. However, when I used to have XP I was able to hook up a microphone to my computer and monitor or hear both the vocals and the music. I could also make a recording that included both the vocals and the music. I would listen to all of it on my receiver. I believe that when recording I would select something like, "What I Hear" or "Stereo Mix" in order to be able to hear and record both the music and vocals.

Since installing Vista I have not be able to do this at all. While I could route everything as you say, I just don't understand why the original functionality is not there.

I think that the only difference between what you recommend and what I tried the other day is that I am using a USB mic selected as Line In. It is able to record the vocals on the line in (but I can't hear myself on the computer), but it won't record the music playing on the computer. Also, I can't hear myself singing which is bad but like I said the worst is that there is no music. I even tried using Microsoft Sound Mapper as the recording input, hoping that it might mix the music with the vocal and record that but it didn't.

I have been reading posts on the internet about how the ability to monitor the audio from the microphone had been disabled in the registry and they identify the values to change but my card apparently is different than the others they have found fixes for. I figured that since this was a karaoke forum then someone must have run into the same situation.
