Reading the thread about most hated Karaoke songs I noticed many people saying that its not so much the songs that they hate, but the songs that are butchered!

This is fair enough! But what songs would people suggest for singers that want to have fun with a few friends but aren't the most confident singers?

Too hard to answer. Some people are easier to suggest songs for than others. Most of the problem is people sing songs that are out of their range & do not want to change keys to accomodate their voice better. Not much you can do here. Others that are more open you can tell them to drop a key or suggest songs that will fit their voice.

That is certainly not true in my case. As a KJ the songs I like least to see are the ones that are:

1. So way overdone that they are burned to a crisp in my room. Or,
2. Are so long and boring that they take up too much time in the round. Or,
3. Aren't the type or style of material that the room appreciates (and every room is different).

A song can be badly rendered but still entertaining if it is a creative choice. And my room is more than helpful in singing along if the selection connects no matter what the singer is doing. An example of that from my last Saturday night would be "If It Makes You Happy." A song practically never done in my room so it's fresh. But everybody knows it. Every woman in the place was singing along.

Don't fret over singing anything perfectly. Instead, check out what is going over wherever you hang out and pick accordingly. You'll be fine!

Can't go wrong with Tequila.

I got that on auto on compuhost. For those folks that won't sing, I get them to sing anyway. .

Not only that, I announce 10 minutes priot on 3 for 2 shots till the end of the "tequila" break. I usually do this at the top of the order... possible just after a dance break.

Do a duet; a new singer with a regular singers that help the new guy along. The song pick should not be a true duet but a normal song. The new guys may just joint in the chorus. Most important is the fact that the new guy is holding a mic and actual sing a few line. If that experience translate positively he will come back singing his own pick.

LOUBOO--Any song you or your friends want to sing is ok -- Don't ever let what you read here stop you from JUST HAVING FUN..that being said I suggest that when you sign up to sing a song that you at least are familiar with the song and the melody.

Jian, that's true. There's been a few times, I've stood up with someone else on thier first try just to boost their confidence- just to get them "in on the fun". And they never seem to realize, as they reallllyyyy start getting into the song, that I'm just standing there lip syncing for the most part & they're solo. But you're right, it seems to serve as an ice breaker, and they'll sooner or later get up by themselves after that.

I've found "I Love Rock n' Roll" is a good starter song for girls that have never done karaoke... I know it's overdone, but it's a song everyone knows and it's one of those that pretty much anyone can sing. If they're being picky and nervous, name that song and almost guaranteed they'll say "Hey, I do know THAT one pretty good". And it's an upbeat, familiar song that the crowd (especially the drunk ones, Lol) will appreciate, so the new singer will get a good response. (and we all know.... the major ingredient to our addiction is loud applause)

yep, there ARE some good songs (and a few hated by others ) that are good for the newbies to do.

"Grandpa" by the Judds and "Nobody" by Sylvia are good for the women.

and dare I say it, "Turn the Page" or "Piano Man" are good for the guys! Even the Eagles "Take It Easy" is yet another!

PBDL as obnoxious whether sung well or poorly. We need a version of this song where they fly-out to Right Field before the runner even makes it to first.

I would sing what YOU like and don't worry about what is said here. People are just "venting," so to speak but when it comes down to it, it's your song to sing. Sometimes a song I dread is done so well or so badly with enthusiasm that it puts a whole new light on it. Sometimes I dread a song but the crowd loves it. So go with what you love that feels comfortable for you.

I don't know your age group or music preferences as far as suggesting songs. My boyfriend always suggests people try something with a fast tempo so you don't have to hold long notes. People appreciate something upbeat. The first ever song I attempted was "Volcano" by Jimmy Buffett.

This is where I was headed too leopard lizard. LouBoo if you are still around, and if you want advice from those of us who've just about seen it all, let us know the type of music you like and the type of club you frequent and we'll be more than happy to give you suggestions.

Now I've got to hear that!!

I haven't heard it first hand but have been told the entire narration in the middle is cut out.

And I just gone done posting my feeling in that regard on the "other" thread... Why repeat myself? Because there are fellow posters who think that their opinion/taste is the final arbiter of what is good and bad.

And personally, I wouldn't enjoy a version of PBTDL WITHOUT the narration. Which I find ironic because I am less of a stickler as some, that all karaoke songs must replicate the original!

The composer (Stedman) is brilliant and has written several pieces I view as "operettas". They don't follow 1-4-5 progressions, the tempos change, the rhythms change, the words have real meaning!

As to the lyrics of PBTDL.... I am happy for anyone who has been so successful in choosing romantic partners that they cannot relate to the effects of succumbing to LUST and the lasting effect that doing so can have on a life. In short, the song confirms the adage that "love is blind". And... note.... not a single vulgar word is uttered!

As to the execution of PBTDL by singers, yeah, sometimes it is as bad as other songs I commonly hear at karaoke. But... but.. when it is done well, including cute antics by the singers... the song is an entertaining as any karaoke song can get.

Lastly, karaoke for me, is about having fun... and I have heard people "butcher" PBTDL but in a way that allowed the audience to have fun as they did so....!
So that's Karaoke for me!

If karaoke is about having fun, why are you "bored" with someone else's fun doing "Rapper's Delight"??

going back to the initial question...I was like you many years ago and what I found the most confidence building was to sing a song with a lot of backing vocals.
I found that easier than singing with another person cos if they went off key then so did I
For some reason we all tend to think ballads are easier to sing than any other genre...which of course is not true...but I was the ballad queen for such a long time...nowadays because its sooo prevalent that those starting out or lacking confidence sing ballads, some places tend to only accept slips for ballads at the beginning of the evening.
So try and find yourself at least two other songs one slightly uptempo and one that everyone can either sing along to or dance to once you have those 3 songs perfected you will feel your confidence rise and no doubt be ready to try some more

I truly wish my response was other than that. It's hard as a KJ to act excited about a singer that just provided me with 7 minutes of boredom. I was a music major at one time and like most all kinds of music. But rap is harder for me to appreciate than any other music genre I have run into in my lifetime. I love, for example, oriental music and its different scale. I like music from India and American Indian chants and Gregorian chants! In short, I like music that most westerners can't even relate to.

In my defense, I like good poetry. I find most rap rhymes trite. Ironically..... I have a 33 year old son who writes raps. His raps are engaging and thought provoking, but they're not music. He "sings" them for me a cappella in that standard rap chant and that works for me.

Which leads me to conclude that "sampling" in rap music may be a device designed, if nothing else, to hide the fact that there is little, if any, music in rap?

And now I am wondering what makes a night of rap chants (music) any different than a night of open mic?
