I filled in hosting last night at a VFW that I go to regularly. Someone told me that an elderly gentleman wanted to sing "Down at the old mill stream" and that it was on the regular host's laptop that I was using. I couldn't find the song at all. A lady came up and said "just put any old time song on and I'll sing with him". So I called up a bunch of people and handed out 3 wireless mics. I put on On Top Of Old Smokey hoping the elderly gentleman knew the song and could follow along.

It was the highlight of the evening, I kept the group up there and put on Dean Martin-Everybody Loves Somebody and one or two other songs that I can't remember, I had a pitcher of beer that night.

It was great to see a bunch of people up there smiling and having a great time TOGETHER. They just loved it. People who didn't even sing were up there and they were all having a ball.

I will cetainly do this again!!!

That's what it's all about :D - I imagine a club like a VFW is a perfect place for those type of group songs

You're right about that Jam. This post has a bunch of fun and friendly people who are for the most part pretty laid back. It's an older crowd.

I try things like that on a whim at that place and so far it's been fun and people have responded positively. I've had people stay up and sing two songs in a row when we had just a few singers too.

I get tired of the same people singing the same songs week after week, but that's really the only thing I can complain about.

That is definitely the icebreaker at a party where most of the people have never done karaoke.

My dad has had a couple of karaoke parties, hosted by me of course. I opened up with Chattanooga Choo Choo and my wife did Sentimental Journey. Then we did a couple of singalongs with the Chartbuster 40s/50s pack I bought. I think the one that got them going was Tiptoe Through The Tulips.

Once they got going (this was the first one) they resurrected mostly show tunes and did those. They had an absolute blast. My dad's best friend talked to me during a song and said, "I only came over to support your father's party. I thought the evening was going to be a complete dud. But this is great! Some of these people haven't had this much fun for 10 years!"

The second party, they were rockin' (in a manner of speaking) from the opening bell. The third was not karaoke and was a singer and piano player, and I think it was a dud in comparison. Karaoke is back in the plan this year.

That sounds great!

I'm so glad I found this out. I'm supposed to fill in again several times over the next few weeks and I am going to do a group sing every night from now on. I'll wait until later in the evening when people are a bit tipsy.

I think I said this in a post awhile back, but....

A couple years ago I was at a bar looking through their songbook. I noticed they had the song Sailing by Christopher Cross. I thought about singing it, but then I thought, "Nah, it wouldn't really fit in with what other people are singing." Then I notice the guy and the girl at the table next to me looking through the book. "Look!" says the guy. "They have Sailing." I almost started cracking up because it was like...serendipity. How could they read my mind?? But the guy told his girlfriend he didn't know the song well enough to try it, so I decided to put the song in myself (not like I needed asking lol). When I got up to sing, three other people came up and joined me! Now Sailing isn't normally the kind of song where 3 other people are just going to spring up and join your singing. It was weird, and I doubt it would ever happen again, but it was a very cool instance of groupsing, and it just goes to show you that you shouldn't doubt your song choices.

I did a groupsing again tonight and actually had one of the regualr singers get angry at me. He said I was mucking everything up and if you're going to have Karaoke then have Karaoke. I apologized and walked away thing about how much fun all the singers had. It was worth it to take some heat from a grumpy person to have a group of people enjoy themselves.
