I use to kj but sold my equipment -- dumb mistake ---- now i want to get back in...fortuately I kept my laptop and all my music.....before I used Peavey PR15 speakers which were ok.....a cheap mixer....a cheap amp....and two wireless mics from Autotech.......

Now---I am looking to get a really good sound, with the lightest weight possible, within reasonable price. I have to set up myself and my back is not as good as it used to be--so speaker weight is major concern lifting up to stands.

Can you guys/girls give me some suggestions....??

Start with budget. What are you expecting to spend? Good sound typically cost money especially if you want the lightweight as well. What is your budget expectation?

Budget is not too tight...........don't want the cheapest....but don't the best in the world........you spend money to make money.....but to start off--there has to be reasonable choices...

Well a figure would be nice. I have seen some people stating money is not object & then want the whole sh'bang for under $1000 then admitting they didn't know it would cost that much. Like Lon says, without the budget, it's tough. For sound I am a HUGE fan of EV. You might want to check what they have against your budget. As an ex KJ, I figure you know wahat you want from a mic. Shure SM58s always come to mind first, but there are other brands that sound fine and may be a bit less.

I don't know if you are using a virtual mixer or not, so no comment.

I don't know a projected venue size, which makes the amp a no comment as well.

We really need more info to be of any real assistance.

Agree you need a NUMBER that you want to spend, getting a GREAT sound for a Great Price is tricky ..but can be done. You will always sacrafice something.
The liteweight thing is also tricky ..like having your cake and eating it too

I've tried all types of setups and for ME and a small to medium sized venue
I've gone to an all in one POWERED MIXER fom Yamaha - Plenty of Features , power and quality that I need. The PEAVEY PR15 are decent speakers and you can still use them as long as your not looking for CLUB thumping Bass.

I guess Shure mics will do.....unless I go wireless.......but understand the problems with people walking away with mics.....

I heard a dj that had BOSE speakers--it was 6' tall--less than 8" wide---mounted in powered sub cabinet....his voice sounded great when he was talking....but music was horrible...high end distorted...

Also heard someone talking about a smaller Peavey speakers and using a sub for the bass punch--but not sure what they were referring to...

I guess I would like to spend less than $1000....but more than $500 on the sound....venues are small--medium.....I just want really good vocals cause I will be playing where the singers are very very good....

But I wouldn't do that, instead just spend the extra $300.00. It will make the system easier to resell, and provide opportunity to rock the house. Better sound will pay off in the long run.

Here are couple of speaker suggestions for small to medium sized places.
Peavey Impulse 100 and Electro Voice Zx1. Both are small and light weight. Check into the RCF 310 and FBT has 8" and 10" high quality speakers.

Stay away from Mackie and JBL-way overpriced. QSC is coming out with a new compact line of really good sounding speakers that were just unveiled a few days ago. They will be available sometime in August or September if you can wait that long. The people who have seen and heard them are raving about the sound and the small size and weight.

There is a new line of super light weight power amplifiers coming out from Peavey for very reasonable prices, not available yet as far as I can tell, but from what I've read, well worth waiting for.

There are several small, light weight subwoofers available for use with these smaller speakers. Electro Voice has the Sb122 passive and Sb2a powered version. Peavey has a lightweight entry level PR sub and the Peavey Impulse line has has a sub also. The Impulse line are much better speakers and they will give better sound and last longer than the PR line.

Electro Voice Sx100+ is a 12" that weighs in at under 35 pounds-they kick butt. Around $400 each. They are also available in a powered version.

If you want better quality than what you had before stay away from entry level products.

If you like Mackie and JBL that's great, but there are better products out there for the money. People are very loyal to their brand preferences, I understand. I think you can do MUCH better for the price being charged for Mackie or JBL. They are overpriced and their reputation is overhyped for what they deliver. So far I haven't found anything that compares to Electro Voice in terms of the performance that they deliver except the Yamaha S115V and I am not going to tote around a 61 pound speaker so that is out of the question.

There are lots of new products coming out that are changing the ballgame as far as price/performance-quality. Use what you like and what you feel delivers the sound and tone you like.

People are the same way with amps and think only QSC and Crown are any good. Just be prepared to pay through the nose for them.

The problem with Mackie speakers right now is you can't get them. I had a friend who got a recommendation for them (and I said they were OK) and then he tried to place an order with GC. Back ordered. Same with zZounds. Their manufacturing problems are starting to hurt.

I recommend all kind of different manus products - I may be brand loyal, but am also open minded to other brands (even recommeneded -UGH - Behringer on occasion, for their specific situation &/or budget & Mackie & JBL are just fine for many situations, some not. I would choose either over a Behringer product anyday of the week, even if it meant having to wait & save up a little more. It's well worth it.
QSC & Crown are priced that way because they are again worth every penny. Again, some people think an amp is an amp & they all do the exact same thing & sound the same, well yes they all do amplify, but sounding the same is not quite a correct assessment.
Same with mixers. Cheap mixers tend to use cheap components & therefore have not as good of sound quality, will they work, sure.
