Post subject:  Lighten Up (Speaker wise)
Over the years I've used many different combinationa of speaker, amps, and subwoofers. Now, at 62, it's time to lighten up. Currently I'm using a Yamaha EMX5014 powered amp, and love it. Light weight, powerful, and easy to carry around.

Now I don't want an over the top, mines bigger than yours, sound system. I'm looking at small, light weight, and portable. I've been waiting for the new JBL Eon305 passive speakers, but I haven't seen any in the stores yet. SOOOO, I tried the Peavey PR12's, and liked them. I like the light weight and the rich sound. (And the price). Have any of you out there have any experience with these speakers, and what do you think.

I have the pr15`s and think they sound good and are very durable. I have used them for 2 years with no problems and no complaints, I`m probably the only one you will hear positive feed back from on these speakers though on this forum...

I'm using the JBL Eon 315's. Plenty of power, and crisp and clean as you could want. I have gotten so many compliments on how clean my system is, and at 32lbs they are easy to lift onto the stands.

There's nothing to consider. Just get 'em... they rock! :D

For lightweight speakers, I think they sound pretty good -- presuming they are given enough power. The EMX5014C should be able to drive them with 350W per channel in stereo mode, which is enough.

The added benefit of the Eons is, since the amp is in the speakers your Rack is lighter too!!! :D

Okay, all the Mackie haters - line up. I almost don't bother posting on here anymore about these kinds of things because the first thing that happens is someone comes down on the Mackie gear. Frankly I love it.

Actually, SR, I'm a middle-aged female and I have a setup that I can move by myself when I have to - two powered SR350s and a powered 15-inch Mackie sub. The sound is amazing. I can easily lift the 350s speakers up on the stands. The sub is doable for me in and out of a van. I have the SM450s as well for bigger venues and with a bit of help I can lift those up myself, though usually put them on the crank up stands if I'm by myself.

Go with powered speakers and a powered sub and you can avoid the extra rack weight, which is why we evolved to the powered setup. Got very tired of the two of us lifting a 150-pound rack in and out of the van.

More cords, yes ... but worth it for the decreased weight lifting every move.

Karen and Koyote, I'm already using the Yamaha EMX5014 powered mixer, so powered speakers are not necessary. Also, since I'm not using power amps, the rack itself is pretty light. My question was concerning lightweight, passive, non-powered speakers. I've been waiting for the non-powered Eon's to hit thge stores, but I got tired of waiting. So, I bought 4 of the PR12's, and just wanted an opinion on these particular speakers. Hopefully someone else out there is using some too, and I can get some feedback.

The problem I have with the PR-12 is the lack of bass. This is true for about every 12" speaker, you just don't get the same thump as the 15". If you can return two of your 12" and get two 15" instead, I think you will be happier.

I agree - I used the PR12 for smaller gigs and loved the sound and lightness of the cabs. But they do lack a deep bottom end. The PR 15 are not that much heavier and do have MORE bass for a few pennies extra.

Well, I can comment on that as well! :D One of my very good friends and a KJ recently ditched his backbreaking Yamaha 15's for the PR15. I've been to his show many times since then, and I can tell you they sound great! I would go for the 15s over the 12s.

Crisp, clean, and full range of sound. If you've got the powered mixer, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up the Peavy PR15 for the enhanced bottom end. If you look at the specs, the PR15s only wiegh 35lbs.

Get them!

I will say it again in my opinion and I have been using them for 2 years they are good sounding speakers and easy to handle. I`m speaking on the PR 15`s..

Look at the Electro-Voice (EV) line. I won't suggest specific models, but give you my impression:

Any EV I've heard sounds as good as the next size up of another MFR. In other words, an EV 12" sounds as good as anothers' 15", and so on. Go take a demo listen. You can't help but be impressed.

that could be why even tho i have 2 pairs of EV 15s i have started to just use my single 12s again recently in smaller to mid sized rooms. my 12s are quite heavy for 12 inch cabs but sound good and save space in the van.

I don't think anything can touch EV as far as quality right now.

Having listened to the new eon 15's, ev's, and mackie powered speakers, I fell in love with the rcf art 12a. Awesome sound and very lightweight at 37lbs. Full rich sound and even some low end.

I would agree, RCF are very close to the EV :wink: RCF is probably the biggest driver manufacture in the world, many high end brand are using their low driver :!:

I just find the ZX series from EV to have more of a flat response, something that you don't find with RCF or Mackie :roll: JBL, I simply don't like their highs, you like it or you don't :wink:

I am very happy with my Yorkville NX55Ps. Light, powerful, and top notch quality.
