Can "Theme Nights Work" for Karaoke ?? There are many that can be ADVERTISED like COUNTRY NIGHT * OLDIES "doowop" Night * METAL NIGHT etc etc Maybe some special props, decorations and special ATTIRE which go with the themes Special SONG PAGES can be printed. Of course singers can sing whatever they want but maybe they would pick a THEMED song. Can it be FUN ???? Anyone have any experiance ????

One outfit near me does it well. They encourage participation by giving you an extra song if you comply with it. One example was Kiss night. If you sang a Kiss song, you got an extra turn. Or if you came in with Kiss makeup, same thing. Another time was country night (in a mostly rock bar). You got an extra turn for a cowboy hat. |

Theme Nights can work. One relatively recent one was announced (not advertised) at the gig, in that anyone who sang a song related to 'driving' would get a free shot. That was a lot of fun. But personally, a night themed on a particular genre could be detrimental... it could cause customers, singers and non-singers, to stay away if they aren't particularly fond of the genre picked. |

I ocassionaly do them on the fly, meaning they aren't pr-planned. They just kind of happen. I will announce it every now and again throughout the night, but let everyone know, it's unofficial and participation isn't mandatory. SOme people would be turned off if they were forced to sing a certain type of song, particularly if they have never done it before. It can be a lot of fun, though, as long as you make sure everyong knows they don't HAVE to do it. |

Singers should always be allowed to sing whatever they wanted, but I like the idea of an EXTRA song if they sang in theme or a SHOT or maybe a TSHIRT >> |

We've done: Beatles 80's hair bands Old time rock n roll While we sang others, we just had a good time sticking to the theme... no outfits, no extra song, no drink specials. I know the regulars here very well, and it was just something we did on a lark one night. |

We've done 50's nights, 60's nights, 70'nights - disco, classic rock nights. Some people really got into it & dressed the parts & I went through my books & printed special books with strictly those songs - yes the regular books were still made available to all but most chose out of the special books. They were pretty fun for the most part & people did get into them. |

We did an awesome "back to school" night, all songs from 80's and 90's, with similarly themed filler music, a lot of people fancy dressed too. Was great! |

I do an "80's Ladies" night once a month. The (ahem) 30 something ladies love it. Madonna, the go-go's, the bangles. Goes over real well and the guys love hearing the girls sing Like a Virgin. |

considering that the majority of the songs that are available and popular are the late seventies and eighties, these kind of promotions work well with karaoke! We've had 'em, attended 'em, and yes, love 'em!  !

On quiet nights some of my regulars will decide amongst themselves, on the fly, to go with certain themes like has recently occurred - "Songs by black singers" "Songs by gay singers" "ABBA songs" It's just for the sake of doing something different. In my experience you can advertise certain theme/fancy dress nights as much as you like but you still only end up with the KJ, the bar staff and maybe 1 or 2 who actually turn up in fancy dress. It's hard work sometimes. |

Themes can be done at private parties but most of the time they just want more of a particular type and not bound to one genre of music. Karaoke theme nights would never work here. |

Theme night can be wicked fun! If you have the bar behind you in promoting and you are announcing the event for a few weeks the turn out can be great. |

I'll be hosting a themed party this Saturday. It is my birthday, and am having a "hippie,60's theme" party. I'll have 60's "transition" music between singers. I bought 5 dozen peace sign beads to give out, as well as John Lennon style sunglasses in 5 different colors. Hippie attire is optional, as is singing 60's music, although it will be encouraged. So far, the response looks promising. Just throw on a tie dye, some jeans, and you're ready to go. I don't THINK it will turn into Woodstock, but you never know.  I have a kj friend attending, and he emailed his regulars, letting them know that he'll be coming, and inviting them. He'll take the crowd to his house for the "after party".

Hosted a St Trinians(?) School Karaoke disco last week. All the women (and some guys ) dressed as Tarty School girls. I was an old fashioned Teacher with mortar board & cane. Great night...

On one fairly slow night at a bar I was a regular at, the KJ decided to do a theme of singing other regulars' songs. Even though they were the same old songs we'd all heard a million times, it ended up being a blast since most people also tried to sing them in the style of (exaggerated, of course) the person who normally sang it. |
