Post subject:  Recommendations for a home karaoke setup
I am looking to purchase a new karaoke player. The new Neo+G players look promising but it's quite expensive.

I'm not going pro, but I do like to practice at home and inviting friends over to sing. What I'm looking for is a player that can play my old CD+Gs, play newer stuff, has key change ability, and can tie into my existing 7.1 home theater system. Also would entertain the possibility of recording the songs I sing for playback. (Probably out of my price range...)

I already have two wireless mics and not looking for an entire system with speakers. I'm just looking for a reputable player between $200-$300. The one I have now is a $99 dungheap.

This has been covered over and over on this board. Vocals from karaoke will destroy your home theatre speakers! Period, the end. So, if you want to spend $200 on a player, and have broken speakers in 7 months, then by all means use them.

My recommendation is to use your home PC to play your CDGs instead!

I've had a blast with the karafun player. Its FREE, and you can play compressed or uncompressed files or directly from the CD.

There is NO difference between a home karaoke system and a "professional" system other then scale. You won't need nearly as much power in your amp, or as comprehensive a mixer, but you still need the same components.

The experts here will tell you not to run karaoke thru your home system. It's the live vocals that are the problem and will tear your speakers up. You are better off buying a mixer, power speakers OR passive speakers and an amp and then if you are just going to use this at home, buy or get a free software program to run the music off your desktop or laptop and play the lyrics on a seperate tv or computer monitor. You are probably looking at spending $500 or more depending on what kind of sound quality and output you will be satisfied with.

Get a laptop & save your money. There are free programs you can use that are more than adequate for home use. You may need to take the time to convert your discs you already own, but once it is done, you never have to use your discs again, Store them for safe keeping.
BTW, running through a home stereo is not really recommended. You can ultimately damage your speakers as they are not designed for live vocals. You would be much better off just getting a small portable system that you can dedicate for karaoke.

Long ago before I got back into the biz, I wanted the same thing in my basement. The above posters are correct, and you can do it for less if you search around and start small.

First, get yourself a small mixer that has effects (reverb). If you watch eBay you could probably get one for under $100. Also check the pawn shops and your local "Penny Saver" or Craigs List for gear.

You will need a mic or two. You can get a good starter for around $39. Then an amp. Again, if you look around you should be able to get a small, used amp for $100 or so. You don't need a huge one to start out.

The speakers will probably cost the most, but you could get a small pair of Behringer's or one of the other cheaper brands from Sam Ash or Musicians Friend. MF has scratch & dent sales every now and then with some good deals. Most are just returns and not really scratched and/or dented. ;) Something like this would probably be fine for home use to get you started: LINK - You could even go mono and just buy one speaker to save even more.

Then use a laptop to play your CD+G's. Will it be ready for the local Karaoke Club? No, but it will be 1000% better than a "home karaoke" unit and your friends will love it.

Then as time goes by you can gradually upgrade the various pieces/parts...which you will. It's an addiction. :P

Thanks for the advice. I already have a system in the garage with preouts to an old home stereo w/ 4 speaker setup. The speakers aren't large, but then again I don't want to piss my neighbors off. In fact, most of the time, I don't even use the mics.

What I was thinking about was something either in my house (the surround system) or another system set up in our sunroom. If I have to go to a new system, I will probably get a laptop since that seems to be the way technology is taking us. Already have two wireless mikes and can move them with no problem.

Hi,

For praticing at Home! For 3 years + I've used the CAVS 203G usb player hooked up to my Big Screen and Entertainment Center. I beefed up the speakers just a little and never had any problems. Granted, it's just for praticing with a few friends every month.
I paid $200.00 3 years ago, today I think they run about $299.00

I use CDGFix Super ($70.00) and I can play CDG, Super CDG, NEO+G, RSQ, and JB199. And Switch Them Around Anyway I Want! BackUp All The Different Formats and Never Have To Use The Originals Again!
